From Frustration to Fire: Spirit Flip the Script in 14-Minute Blitz

Sydney Olympic were left ruing missed chances at Belmore Sports Ground as NWS Spirit FC produced a fierce second-half revival to snatch a dramatic victory on enemy turf.

After Yujo Fujita handed Olympic an early advantage, the hosts once again failed to close out the contest and Spirit made them pay. Inspired by the electric Shoki Yoshida, the visitors flipped the script in a blistering 14-minute second-half spell that turned frustration into triumph.

Olympic struck first, capitalising on sharp counter-attacking football against Spirit’s measured, possession-heavy approach. While the visitors enjoyed more attempts in the opening 45 minutes, few truly troubled goalkeeper Josip Orlovic, with Olympic’s defence throwing bodies on the line.

Jacob Tresoglavic nearly doubled the lead on the break but could only scuff wide from a tight angle. Sam Armson responded at the other end with an effort off target, while Marco Arambasic chased down a rapid counter only to see his driven ball slip away for a goal-kick.

Fujita was relentless in the first half, snapping into passing lanes and surging into the box. After intercepting a short exchange between Yoshida and Kyah Williams, he carved his way down the left but slid his effort agonisingly wide. It was an entertaining contest — yet Olympic’s inability to convert dominance into a commanding lead would prove costly.

Spirit emerged after the interval with renewed intent. Yoshida burst into the box early, only to be denied by Orlovic’s outstretched boot. Minutes later, he combined neatly in a one-two before sending his effort narrowly past the upright — a warning Olympic failed to heed.

The pressure mounted. Armson thundered a strike against the post as Olympic reeled. At the other end, Fujita rounded Chris Marques and seemed poised to seal the contest, but a heroic, perfectly timed tackle from Simon Nicholas extinguished the danger.

From that defensive lifeline, Spirit struck.

Racing upfield, the visitors found their reward when Yoshida applied the decisive touch, the ball trickling agonisingly over the line to level the score. Belmore fell silent; Spirit had momentum.

Moments later, Yoshida was brought down inside the area. Up stepped Andre Tamaki, coolly sending Orlovic the wrong way from the spot to complete the turnaround. In the space of 14 ruthless minutes, Spirit had transformed the match — and their season narrative.

Now in control, the visitors dictated possession and created further opportunities to extend their lead, though none were taken. Olympic’s frustration boiled over in the 83rd minute when strong penalty appeals were waved away. Yuta Komura was booked for dissent, with tempers flaring on the sideline soon after.

Spirit calmly saw out the closing stages, reverting to the composed possession play that had defined their approach. Olympic were left chasing shadows — and a result they will feel slipped through their grasp before halftime.

It was a comeback forged in resilience and belief. True to their name, NWS Spirit showed exactly that — clawing victory from the jaws of defeat in stirring fashion at Belmore.
