NWS Spirit FC produced a disciplined performance to defeat St George City 2–0 at Christie Park on Saturday afternoon, grinding out an important victory to record back-to-back wins and build momentum in their 2026 campaign.

In a tightly contested encounter that was largely decided by key moments in the second half, the 2025 Premiers combined defensive resilience with clinical finishing to overcome a determined St George City side.

The hosts created the first real opportunity of the match in the 11th minute when Finn Ballard-McBride attempted an effort from a narrow angle, but St George City goalkeeper Jack Kenny was well positioned to deny the attempt.

The first half developed into a tactical battle, with both sides relying heavily on set pieces to create opportunities. Paolo Mitry delivered a dangerous free kick from the left flank for the visitors, but it evaded everyone in the box and drifted harmlessly past the far post.

As the match settled into a rhythm, NWS Spirit FC began to edge forward with several half chances. Sam Armson came close with the best of them, while the home side also had a pair of penalty appeals waved away as they pushed for the opening goal.

Spirit’s clearest opportunity of the half came from a slick passing move. Finn Ballard-McBride cleverly knocked the ball down into the path of Shoki Yoshida, though the midfielder was unable to keep his shot down as it sailed over the crossbar.

Yoshida continued to influence proceedings from dead-ball situations and later stepped up to take a free kick just outside the area, but his effort thudded into the St George City defensive wall.

The hosts kept probing, with Riku Kobayashi weaving his way through the visitors’ defence before firing a low effort that was comfortably gathered by Jack Kenny.

Another promising opportunity arrived in the 38th minute when Kaan Nizam led a dangerous counterattack and laid the ball off to Ballard-McBride, whose strike was directed straight at the goalkeeper.

Despite the attacking intent from both sides, neither team was able to break the deadlock before halftime, with the teams heading into the sheds locked at 0–0 on a grey afternoon at Christie Park.

St George City threatened early in the second half when Hiroto Dohmoto curled in a dangerous set piece that Yohan Pederson flicked toward goal, forcing NWS Spirit FC goalkeeper Christopher Marques into a sharp save.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute, and it came from a swift and well-executed counterattack. Aiden Mostofi drove forward before finding Shoki Yoshida, who finished confidently into the bottom corner to give NWS Spirit FC a 1–0 lead.

St George City attempted to respond immediately. Substitute Hugo McAteer nearly made an instant impact when he was picked out inside the box by Dohmoto, but he was unable to guide the ball toward goal.

The visitors continued to search for an equaliser as the match progressed. Two substitutes combined well when Stefano Rossello delivered a cross perfectly onto the foot of Oscar Gultekin, but he could not steer his effort past the alert Christopher Marques.

The result was finally sealed in the 86th minute.

Riku Kobayashi fired a powerful effort on goal which was parried by Jack Kenny, but the rebound fell kindly for substitute Thomas Mason, who reacted quickest to slot the ball home and make it 2–0 for the hosts.

Marques was called into action again late in the match, producing impressive reflex saves to deny both Hiroto Dohmoto and substitute Ahmad Taleb in quick succession as NWS Spirit FC protected their advantage.

The hosts ultimately held firm to secure the 2–0 victory, earning three valuable points and continuing to build momentum with back-to-back wins.

After the match, NWS Spirit FC coach Sergio Malfara praised his side’s resilience in what he expected to be a difficult encounter.

“It’s a game where we knew it would be an arm wrestle and we spoke about ways to expose them at half-time,” Malfara said.

“Thomas Mason getting a goal is due to the work of the club at the youth levels which allows me to trust them to deliver in those moments.”

For St George City coach Mirko Jurilj, it was a frustrating afternoon and he offered an honest assessment of his team’s performance.

“It was a poor performance,” Jurilj said.

“It is concerning when you get outworked, outrun and fought while lacking the desire to get back into the game. That is on me — we’ll get back to work fixing that during the week.”
