Late penalty chaos sees Raiders and Sharks settle for a point

SD Raiders FC and Sutherland Sharks played out a four-goal thriller in a frantic 2-2 draw at Ernie Smith Reserve, with penalties, lead changes and late drama defining a chaotic contest.
The home side struck first in the 3rd minute through Martin Fernandez, finishing emphatically to give the Raiders an early advantage, but Sutherland responded quickly with Brendan Gan heading home six minutes later to level the scores.
From there, chances flowed in an open and entertaining first half. Fernandez went close again with a thunderous effort that nearly ripped the net, while both sides traded half-chances in a high-tempo contest that never settled.
The Sharks thought they had edged ahead midway through the second half when Nick Olsen found the net after a neat touch inside the box, but the Raiders were handed a lifeline from the penalty spot after Yuto Kokuryo handled on the line. Jakob Malbasa stepped up and converted calmly to restore parity.
Remarkably, the drama didn’t stop there. Within a minute, the Raiders conceded another penalty at the other end, only for Olsen to thunder his effort against the underside of the bar, letting the hosts off the hook in a moment of sheer chaos.
Earlier, Olsen had been heavily involved in Sutherland’s attacking play, providing the assist for Gan’s equaliser with a pinpoint cross that was headed home unmarked.
Fernandez remained the Raiders’ main attacking threat, forcing saves and firing narrowly wide throughout a lively first half, while Sutherland also wasted several promising openings as the match remained wide open.
After the break, the intensity continued with both sides pushing for control. Olsen eventually put the Sharks back in front in the 72nd minute, finishing smartly after good build-up play to silence the home crowd.
But the Raiders refused to go away. Malbasa struck again from the spot after Kokuryo’s handball, calmly dinking his penalty over the keeper to make it 3-3 and complete a remarkable personal turnaround.
The late stages descended into further chaos, with another penalty awarded moments later, but Olsen’s effort was again denied by the woodwork as the ball crashed off the underside of the bar and was cleared.
In the end, neither side could find a winner, with Sutherland likely left to rue missed chances and missed opportunities to close the game out, while the Raiders will feel they earned a hard-fought point in one of the games of the season.
