Nakano Stunner Leads United 58 To Dominant Victory Over Spirit

Sydney United 58 continued their strong run of form with a convincing 2-0 victory over NWS Spirit FC at Sydney United Sports Centre, strengthening their position in third place and keeping them within touching distance of second spot.

The result marked United 58’s third victory in their last four competition matches, with Miro Vlastelica’s side producing another disciplined performance at both ends of the pitch.

A stunning strike from Koya Nakano was the highlight of the afternoon, with the midfielder producing a goal-of-the-season contender from outside the box to seal the result and give the hosts an unassailable advantage.

NWS Spirit started brightly and showed plenty of attacking intent in the opening stages.

Just seconds after kick-off, Callum Kealy delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, but Michael Glassock was alert to clear the danger before Adrian Vlastelica was forced into two further defensive interventions shortly afterwards.

Sydney United 58 responded and showed why they remain one of the competition’s strongest sides.

In the 13th minute, Julian Cop produced a powerful run before seeing his initial effort take a deflection. The forward recovered quickly but could only fire directly at Spirit goalkeeper Jay Coates.

The contest continued to open up, with Farah Koko coming closest for the hosts in the 23rd minute, forcing Coates into an excellent save to tip his close-range effort over the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Carlos De Oliveira looked certain to create another opportunity from close range, but Aiden Mostofi produced a perfectly timed sliding challenge to deny him.

However, United 58 eventually found the breakthrough just before half-time.

Koko received the ball just inside the penalty area and produced a composed finish that flew beyond the Spirit defence and into the far corner, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Sydney United 58 continued their momentum after the restart.

De Oliveira almost doubled the advantage in the 51st minute, only to be denied as he attempted to get his shot away, before Leroy Jennings fired over the crossbar moments later.

Spirit continued searching for an equaliser, and Coates produced another important intervention in the 60th minute, making himself big to deny Cop in a one-on-one situation.

The contest was effectively decided in the 64th minute when Nakano produced a moment of brilliance.

Receiving the ball outside the penalty area, Nakano unleashed a stunning strike that flew beyond Coates and nestled under the crossbar, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and giving United 58 a 2-0 advantage.

Spirit struggled to find a way back into the contest, with Coates continuing to keep the scoreline respectable by denying De Oliveira in the 74th minute.

The visitors’ afternoon became even more difficult in the 81st minute when Simon Nicholas was shown a straight red card after bringing down Michael Krslovic, who was through on goal.

United 58 managed the closing stages comfortably to secure another important victory and a valuable clean sheet.

Following the match, goalkeeper Adam Pavlesic praised his side’s response and renewed confidence.

“Today’s win was such an important victory. Not long ago we did the job against Marconi, then fell against St George, but we’re well and truly back on track after today,” Pavlesic said.

“We strive for clean sheets and for good performances, we did both today, not to mention added some goals to our tally.

“Farah (Koko) and Koya (Nakano) scored two excellent strikes which is great for our confidence as well.”

Pavlesic also praised his side’s mentality after Spirit were reduced to 10 players late in the contest.

“After the Spirit’s red card we continued to play as we did beforehand. We’d already scored two goals and it occurred late in the match. In the end we deserved to be winners.”
