APIA Leichhardt have been crowned the 2026 NPL Men’s NSW Premiers with a round to spare after securing the point they needed in a tense 0-0 draw against Sydney United 58 at Sydney United Sports Centre.

The point was enough for the famous Italian club to secure yet another trophy during a special spell under head coach Franco Parisi, adding another chapter to the club’s proud history.

It was an exciting opening 10 minutes, with both sides battling to get on the front foot in a crucial fixture.

APIA appeared to be the more threatening side early, looking characteristically dangerous on the counter-attack while also pressing aggressively.

However, the margins were thin between two quality sides, with neither able to concede any significant opportunities.

There was a clear nervous energy across the 22 players on the pitch, with everyone aware of the permutations surrounding the contest.

That made for gripping viewing for the neutral, with both teams knowing exactly what was at stake.

The first half concluded with just four shots between the two sides, with both teams looking strong and resilient in their defensive blocks but lacking the creative spark needed to break the other down.

The second half began in a more exhilarating fashion, with both sides firing up following an early piece of tension between Jack Stewart and Bailey Rule.

Mason Wells and Stewart then had significant chances within a few minutes of each other for United 58 and APIA respectively, with the game becoming increasingly end-to-end.

In the 58th minute, a low ball from Stewart found the feet of Rory Jordan, who had time to get a shot away.

The winger lashed an effort towards goal but could not find the target, with the ball sailing over the crossbar.

At the other end, Julian Cop went close for United 58 with an ambitious effort from range that flew just wide of the top-left corner.

The second half continued to produce an entertaining contest, but neither side could find a breakthrough or create a truly significant opportunity.

As the half progressed, United 58 began to assert more control, with the hosts knowing they needed all three points to keep their own Premiership hopes alive.

And in the 79th minute, they came agonisingly close to finding the go-ahead goal.

Following a throw-in, sharp movement from Wells allowed him to receive the ball before cleverly dinking it towards Carlos De Oliveira to initiate a lovely one-two.

Wells received possession again, shifted the ball onto his right foot and unleashed a powerful strike towards goal.

The effort beat APIA goalkeeper Oliver Kalac but crashed against the frame of the goal, with the crossbar denying United 58 their much-desired breakthrough.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure, with a low near-post effort from Farah Koko forcing Kalac into an important save.

United 58 also looked threatening from a series of set pieces, but they simply could not find a way through a stubborn and resilient APIA defence.

APIA showed tremendous composure and strength during the closing stages, holding firm to secure the precious point that officially delivered them the 2026 NPL Men’s NSW Premiership.

The celebrations could begin in the APIA camp, with Parisi’s side crowned Premiers with one regular-season fixture still to play.

For Sydney United 58, the result brings an end to their Premiership hopes, but they remain firmly in the fight for a top-two finish and home advantage heading into the Championship Series.
