After entering the NPL Men’s NSW top-six with a win over Sydney FC last weekend, we spoke to Wollongong Wolves star Harrison Buesnel on their recent form and the prospect of playing finals this campaign as the club has turned its fortunes around mid-season.

The Wolves have enjoyed a stellar run of form, unbeaten in six games, including four wins from their last five matches with interim coach Julio Miranda reigniting the club’s fight for silverware.

After appearing on the outer of the intense race for finals, the Wolves have clawed themselves back into it, with their recent form seeing them reach sixth place on the weekend.

“I think that the strong recent form has been coming,” Buesnel said.

“We had a run of losses but we weren’t playing that bad, we put in some good performances just couldn’t come out on top.

“The key to our recent form has been belief that we have the quality to win games.

“We had been playing well in moments this season so focusing on putting together more consistent performances from start to finish has been a big part of our recent success.”

Buesnel has been a key performer for Wollongong all campaign, but particularly in recent weeks, with the only goal in their win over Sydney coming courtesy of a towering header from their star defender.

With the top-six making the NPL Men’s NSW finals campaign, that spot is now Wollongong Wolves’ to lose.

“The feeling in the dressing room is obviously positive after the recent form,” said Buesnel.

“We know there is still a job to be done and four very important games to be played before finals.”

With just four matches remaining, Buesnel knows what has to be done, as they will take on Mt Druitt Town Rangers this weekend to retain their spot in top-six going into the last three games of the season.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” he said.

“There’s no easy games in this competition and the last four games are against some quality teams.

“The focus is on preparing well and giving it everything for the next four weeks to get a spot in the finals campaign.”

Wollongong will take on Mt Druitt Town Rangers at Popondetta Park on Saturday evening, with the 5pm kick-off also available live and free on Football NSW’s YouTube Channel.
