Lambert Park Erupts as APIA Blitz Wolves in Ruthless First-Half Masterclass

APIA Leichhardt roared to life at Lambert Park, claiming their second win of the season in emphatic fashion with a 2–0 victory over Wollongong Wolves.
A blistering late first-half surge courtesy of Presley Ortiz and Jordan Segreto proved the difference in a heavyweight NPL Men’s NSW showdown.
It was a contest that exploded with energy early and demanded grit late. The first half crackled with intensity and attacking flair, while the second became a tactical arm-wrestle. But when the dust settled, it was Franco Parisi’s men who stood tallest, pocketing all three points in front of their passionate home support.
The Wolves fired the first warning shot in just the fifth minute, carving out a double chance that required brilliance from APIA goalkeeper Oliver Kalac — twice. Kazuya Yamamura unleashed a thunderous strike from distance that Kalac superbly parried. With the danger not fully cleared, Marcus Beattie pounced on the rebound, only for Kalac to again rise to the occasion and tip the ball around the post.
APIA’s response was immediate. In the eighth minute, Ortiz burst through one-on-one with Wolves custodian Daniel Solsky, who reacted sharply to deny the livewire forward. Moments later, Segreto whipped a shot narrowly wide as the hosts began to turn the screw.
The pressure intensified. In the 35th minute, Edward Caspers unleashed a rocket that forced Solsky into a stunning reflex save to tip the ball over the crossbar. The breakthrough felt inevitable — and it arrived five minutes later.
Ortiz’s determination paid dividends in the 40th minute. After his initial effort was blocked, he refused to be denied, regathering possession and rifling his second attempt into the top corner to ignite Lambert Park.
APIA almost doubled their lead instantly. Ortiz slipped a clever pass to Segreto, whose sliding effort seemed destined for the net until Dylan Ryan produced a miraculous goal-line header to keep the Wolves alive.
But only briefly.
On the stroke of halftime, APIA struck again. In a scrappy but decisive moment, Segreto squeezed home a diagonal finish to hand the hosts a deserved two-goal cushion heading into the break after a dominant spell.
The second half told a different story — tight, tense, and fiercely contested. Both sides dug deep, neither willing to yield an inch. With five substitutions apiece, both coaches shuffled their decks in search of momentum, yet clear-cut chances proved scarce.
The final real opportunity fell in the 90th minute when Jack Stewart’s crisp diagonal effort forced another sharp save from Solsky. It was the last meaningful act in a half defined more by resolve than spectacle — a stark contrast to the fireworks of the opening 45 minutes.
Post-match, APIA coach Franco Parisi praised his side’s commitment and quality.
“We stayed true to our football today,” he said.
“It became infectious because Wollongong also played some good football. Both teams had their moments, and credit to them — they didn’t make it easy.
“With five substitutions now part of the modern game, it shows how hard everyone is working. We’re happy with our quality, and now we look forward to Blacktown City next week.”
Across the corridor, Wolves coach and former Socceroo Luke Wilkshire did not shy away from accountability.
“We were nowhere near good enough in the first half,” he admitted.
“I take responsibility. We have no excuses — at times we couldn’t have been any worse.
“The second half improved with the changes, but the damage was done before the break.”
Under the Lambert Park lights, APIA made a statement. Ruthless when it mattered, resilient when required and ready for the next challenge whilst it was great to see the return of one of the club’s most consistent defenders Themba Muata-Marlow who made his comeback following a knee injury that ruled him out of the 2025 season.
