Wanderers Held Late as Spirit Snatch Draw

The Western Sydney Wanderers and NWS Spirit FC shared the points in a tense National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW Match of the Round, with both sides striking late in a 1–1 draw.

Alaat Abdul-Rahman broke the deadlock for the hosts before Riku Kobayashi rescued a point for Spirit inside the final ten minutes.

Following four changes to the side that fell to APIA Leichhardt last weekend, the Wanderers looked revitalised, particularly with the return of attacking duo Abdul-Rahman and Awan Lual, who helped the home side start brightly.

Spirit, aiming to break into the top four with a win, struggled to find their usual rhythm early on. The Wanderers’ high press disrupted their build-up play and forced errors across the backline.

Chances were limited in a tightly contested first half, but the Wanderers came closest in the 26th minute when Harper Ryles’ header from a Lachlan Sattout corner crashed against the crossbar.

The second half began with greater urgency from both sides, and Spirit goalkeeper Christopher Marques was quickly called into action. He produced three saves inside the opening ten minutes—first dealing with a looping effort from Julian Cop that was affected by the wind, before twice denying Lual after a costly turnover handed the Wanderers a promising opportunity.

At the other end, Wanderers goalkeeper Tristan Vidackovic was also tested, comfortably saving an effort from Spirit captain Grant Cornwell.

The breakthrough finally arrived with just 15 minutes remaining. Substitute Tristan Arrarte surged through midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted pass to Lual, whose initial effort was denied by Marques. However, Abdul-Rahman reacted quickest to the rebound, finishing from close range to give the Wanderers a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the goal, the hosts nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Atiya Waraga cut inside onto his left foot and rattled the underside of the crossbar.

Spirit, however, refused to back down.

Pushing forward in search of an equaliser, they found a way through after sustained pressure down the left flank. A cutback from Mostofi initially appeared to be dealt with, but a series of missed clearances saw the ball fall to Kobayashi, who kept his composure to guide it into the net and restore parity.

With less than ten minutes remaining, both sides pushed for a winner in an increasingly open contest, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough.

In a game played on a knife’s edge, both sides were left with mixed feelings at full-time.

“We’ll take the point,” said NWS Spirit head coach Sergio Malfara.

Meanwhile, Wanderers coach Panny Nikas admitted his side felt they had done enough to win.

“I can see in the boys’ faces that collectively we thought we deserved the three points,” he said.

“The boys have been working hard, the mentality of the group has been positive, and what they put into the week is what they get out of the weekend. We’ll be back into training tomorrow and plan for UNSW.”
