Round 15 Preview – NPL Men’s NSW

npl-mens-nsw-match-of-the-round-preview

There is a new league leader in the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW competition as we reach Round 15 and the halfway point of the season.

Much is on the line already for many teams, whether in the battle for the Premiership, finals football, or to avoid relegation and the relegation play-off.

Sydney FC v Sydney Olympic

7:30pm, Friday 15 May – Ilinden Sports Centre

At Ilinden Sports Centre, Sydney FC host Sydney Olympic on Friday night in the first match of Round 15.

After going five games without defeat, Sydney FC suffered a heavy defeat against Rockdale on the weekend. Only three points outside the top six, this could be a key performance to set themselves up for the second half of the season.

Olympic’s woes in 2026 continued after they suffered defeat number 11 on the weekend. They will need to back up this week without one of their best performers so far this season, goalkeeper Josip Orlovic.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Blacktown City

3pm, Saturday 16 May – Wanderers Football Park

Saturday’s first game takes us to Wanderers Football Park as Western Sydney Wanderers take on Blacktown City.

The Wanderers continue to be impressive this season and Panni Nikas’ team are on the edge of finals football. The problem for them is that a defeat drags them back down and right into the relegation battle.

City seem to have turned a corner, but this game is one of the most important in their season. It feels like that week after week for City, but they continue to improve and gather momentum.

UNSW FC v Rockdale Ilinden

3pm, Saturday 16 May – The Village Green

Rockdale Ilinden travel to The Village Green on Saturday afternoon to take on UNSW FC.

Ilinden have gone three games without defeat since their heavy loss to Manly United. A strong first-half performance last week from Paul Dee’s side meant they had finished the job early against Sydney FC.

This away trip will be difficult, with The Village Green a tough place to go.

UNSW will look to utilise that home-ground advantage. They are yet to lose at home in 2026 and are turning it into a fortress. Picking up points is key for the home side here, particularly with teams around them near the relegation play-off spot all collecting points in recent weeks.

SD Raiders v Sutherland Sharks

5pm, Saturday 16 May – Ernie Smith Reserve

SD Raiders welcome the Sutherland Sharks to Ernie Smith Reserve on Saturday evening.

SD seem to have found their feet in the top tier of late, with only one defeat in their last four outings, coming against APIA Leichhardt. A win here would see them leapfrog the Sharks on the ladder and potentially create a gap over those below them.

The Sharks are winless in their last four league outings and have dropped down to ninth on the ladder. A defeat here could put them eight points outside finals positions and drag them into the relegation dogfight.

Manly United v Wollongong Wolves

5pm, Saturday 16 May – Cromer Park

An intriguing fixture awaits at Cromer Park on Saturday evening as Manly United host Wollongong Wolves.

Inconsistent results for Vlado Knezevic’s team so far this season, but much is expected from the young side. They have shown strong form at home, losing only one game this season, and last week’s victory over UNSW FC would have boosted confidence throughout the squad.

The Wolves come to town as one of the form teams in the competition. They haven’t lost since 28 February, taking them to a 10-game unbeaten run. They must win here, though, if they still harbour hopes of challenging for the Premiership.

NWS Spirit FC v Marconi Stallions

5:30pm, Saturday 16 May – Christie Park

The 2025 Premiers NWS Spirit FC welcome the 2026 Premiership challengers Marconi Stallions to Christie Park on Saturday.

Spirit have been impressive this season and have surprised many, continuing to produce strong results that currently have them in sixth place on the ladder. If they can find consistency, they will once again be playing finals football, which would be a fine achievement by Serge Malfara and his team.

Five straight wins, second place, and red-hot form — that is the Marconi Stallions at the moment. They have been scoring goals at will, with Damian Tsekenis and Marko Jesic firing, while Franco Maya is also in scintillating form. This will not be an easy away trip, however, and they will be prepared for a difficult game at Macquarie Park.

St George FC v Sydney United 58

6:30pm, Saturday 16 May – Barton Park

Another interesting fixture takes shape in Round 15, this time at Barton Park as St George FC host Sydney United 58.

Eight straight defeats have seen St George drop from finals contenders to fighting to stay out of the relegation zone. Brian “Bomber” Brown returned to the dugout last weekend and saw some positives, which he will be looking to build on this weekend.

Their injury list is extensive, and they will be hoping to get players back as soon as possible to help arrest this poor run of form.

United suffered only their second defeat of the season last weekend and will be keen to bounce straight back. They have been relentless this season, and the APIA loss should not affect them too much.

Michael Krslovic hasn’t scored since Round 11 and will be keen to end his mini goal drought.

St George FA v APIA Leichhardt

7:15pm, Saturday 16 May – Penshurst Park

The final game of the round takes place at Penshurst Park on Saturday night as St George FA host APIA Leichhardt.

Mirko Jurilj finally had some depth to his squad last week and it paid dividends straight away, defeating Sutherland Sharks 1-0. They will look to use Penshurst Park to their advantage against the new league leaders and cause an upset.

APIA showed their strength last week, outlasting Sydney United 58 to jump to the top of the table. Oscar Gonzalez has everyone talking, with the youngster scoring his fifth goal of the season and setting up another.

It will be a difficult away day, but one APIA will need to manage if they want to remain at the top of the pile.
