Wollongong Wolves extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manly United at Cromer Park, with Kazuya Yamamura’s first-half strike proving decisive in a tight, physical contest.

The decisive moment arrived in the 18th minute when Yamamura reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box, finishing clinically into the bottom corner after Saxon Hillyer’s clearance fell kindly into his path.

It was a fast-starting encounter, with Manly threatening early as Sebastian Hernandez was called into action inside the opening minute, before Luke Nieuwenhof produced a crucial clearance at the other end to deny Wollongong in a lively opening spell.

The Wolves began to build momentum soon after, with Flynn Madden going agonisingly close in the 7th minute when his effort rolled narrowly wide across goal. Hernandez continued to be involved, working his way into dangerous areas, but was denied by Manly goalkeeper Harry Turner and a covering Aaron O’Driscoll as the visitors pressed.

Manly had their moments in response. O’Driscoll went close with a header in the 29th minute, while Samuel Griffiths tested the defence in first-half stoppage time, but Wollongong goalkeeper Daniel Solsky remained alert to preserve his side’s advantage.

Wollongong nearly doubled their lead early in the second half when Alex Masciovecchio narrowly missed converting into an empty net after a dangerous break, while Manly pushed for an equaliser through Stephan De Robillard and Darcy Burgess, both of whom went close but couldn’t find the finishing touch.

As the pressure mounted, Turner kept Manly in the contest with key interventions, including a strong stop in the 60th minute to deny De Robillard.

Despite sustained Manly pressure in the closing stages — including a late De Robillard effort that was deflected wide — Wollongong held firm, defending resolutely to secure all three points and another clean sheet.

After the match, Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky praised his side’s resilience, particularly given squad challenges and the difficult away trip.

He said the defensive effort was key to the result, with the group maintaining composure throughout a demanding contest, adding that the team understood the challenge Manly would pose at Cromer Park and were pleased to come away with a clean sheet and another important win.
