Round 28 Preview – NPL Men’s NSW
As the 2026 NPL Men’s NSW competition enters its final three rounds of the regular campaign, the pressure is mounting at both ends of the table, with eight crucial fixtures set to shape the Premiership, finals and relegation races.
With just nine points left to play for, the margins are becoming increasingly fine. The Premiership remains firmly up for grabs, the race for the Top Six is congested, while several clubs continue to fight desperately to avoid automatic relegation or secure a place in the promotion-relegation playoff.
Every point matters from here, with another huge weekend of NPL Men’s NSW action ahead.
Sydney FC vs St George City FA
7:30pm, Friday 14 August – Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre
Sydney FC will take on St George City FA in an intriguing Friday night fixture with plenty at stake for both sides.
The Sky Blues have endured a difficult recent run and haven’t won any of their last six matches, yet they remain just one point outside the Top Six with three rounds remaining.
That makes this a crucial opportunity for Sydney FC to turn their form around before the finals race reaches its conclusion. A victory would put them in a much stronger position heading into the penultimate round.
St George City, meanwhile, have emerged as one of the form teams of the competition.
Three successive victories have propelled Mirko Jurilj’s side up the ladder, with City now just three points behind the Sky Blues and firmly in the conversation for an unlikely finals berth.
A win for Sydney would cement them as a finals favourite heading into the final two rounds, while three points for St George City could put them within touching distance of the Top Six and keep their remarkable late-season surge alive.
With both sides desperate for the points, Friday night promises to be an intriguing contest.
Western Sydney Wanderers FC vs St George FC
3:00pm, Saturday 15 August – Wanderers Football Park
St George FC will travel to Wanderers Football Park requiring a strong result as they look to avoid automatic relegation to the Football NSW League One Men’s competition.
The Saints picked up an impressive point last weekend, holding Premiership favourites APIA Leichhardt to a 0-0 draw at home.
However, the result was not enough to keep them off the bottom of the ladder, with Sydney Olympic’s crucial victory over UNSW seeing the Blues leapfrog them.
With both clubs fighting to avoid automatic relegation and potentially secure a place in the promotion-relegation playoff, every point is now vital for St George.
They will face a Western Sydney Wanderers side with plenty of motivation of their own, with the Wanderers still within touching distance of a finals position.
The hosts will know that dropping points at this stage could prove costly, while St George have little choice but to go after the result they need.
Sydney Olympic FC vs Sydney United 58 FC
5:00pm, Saturday 15 August – Belmore Sports Ground
Sydney Olympic will host rivals Sydney United 58 FC in one of the most important matches of the season to date.
Olympic enter the clash having picked up an invaluable 3-1 victory over UNSW FC, with goals from Bailey Callaghan, Adam Bugarija and Kaan Nizam lifting them off the bottom of the ladder and keeping their survival hopes alive.
A victory this weekend would be monumental for the former NSL giants, particularly given how tight the relegation battle has become.
However, it will not come easily against a Sydney United 58 side in strong form.
United 58 have won four of their last five matches and have moved into second place, sitting just four points behind league leaders APIA Leichhardt.
The visitors know that another dropped point could prove extremely costly in their Premiership pursuit. If APIA win this weekend and United 58 fail to claim all three points, the Premiership will almost certainly be out of their hands.
With massive implications at both ends of the table, this shapes as one of the most intriguing fixtures of the round and a huge contest between two of the biggest football clubs in New South Wales.
Manly United FC vs NWS Spirit FC
5:00pm, Saturday 15 August – Cromer Park
Manly United and NWS Spirit will face off at Cromer Park on Saturday evening in a match that could have major ramifications for the race for finals football.
The hosts have been on an exceptional recent run, having not lost a match since Round 18.
That remarkable form has seen Manly shoot up the ladder and into fifth place, putting themselves in an excellent position to secure finals football after a challenging start to the season.
However, there are plenty of sides breathing down their neck, with only four points separating Manly from 12th place.
That means the pressure remains firmly on the Northern Beaches club despite their recent success.
NWS Spirit, currently sitting in 11th, desperately need a victory to keep their finals hopes alive heading into the final two matches of their campaign.
A win would give Spirit a significant boost, while a defeat could effectively end their hopes of breaking into the Top Six.
With the two sides separated by several positions but still connected by a congested ladder, this match could prove crucial in determining who finishes inside the Top Six at the end of Round 30.
APIA Leichhardt FC vs SD Raiders FC
6:00pm, Saturday 15 August – Lambert Park
APIA Leichhardt will take on SD Raiders FC to conclude Saturday’s fixtures in another massive contest at the top of the NPL Men’s NSW table.
The hosts will come into the match full of motivation, currently sitting top of the ladder and four points clear of Sydney United 58 in second place.
A victory would put APIA in an extremely strong position to claim the Premiership, while a United 58 defeat against Sydney Olympic would officially secure the coveted trophy for Franco Parisi’s side.
However, SD Raiders will be no easy opponent.
The visitors come into the fixture riding high after four successive victories, while they also enjoyed a memorable Australia Cup result during the week against A-League Men’s side Macarthur Bulls.
That form and confidence will make them a dangerous opponent for the league leaders.
APIA will know that the opportunity to potentially wrap up the Premiership is in their hands, but the Raiders will be determined to spoil the celebrations and continue their own strong finish to the campaign.
Marconi Stallions FC vs Sutherland Sharks FC
3:00pm, Sunday 16 August – Marconi Stadium
Marconi Stallions will take on Sutherland Sharks in one of three Sunday afternoon clashes, with both clubs still having plenty to play for despite contrasting recent form.
Marconi have experienced a difficult month and come into this clash on the back of four consecutive defeats.
That poor run has had major consequences for their campaign, with the Stallions now all but out of the Premiership race after spending much of the season near the summit.
However, there is still plenty at stake.
Marconi will now look to return to winning ways and set their sights on a Top Two finish, which would secure them a home semi-final and provide some momentum heading into the Championship Series.
Sutherland Sharks, meanwhile, have strong motivations of their own.
Now sitting comfortably in fourth place, a victory this weekend would make it extremely difficult for any other side to catch them in the race for the final Australian Championship position.
The Sharks will therefore be looking to take another significant step towards securing that position, while Marconi will be desperate to halt their losing streak.
Rockdale Ilinden FC vs Wollongong Wolves FC
3:00pm, Sunday 16 August – Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre
Rockdale Ilinden will be looking to salvage their season with a finals appearance after experiencing a slump in form in recent weeks.
Rockdale have won just one of their last five matches and have subsequently fallen to seventh on the ladder, sitting just one point behind both fifth and sixth place.
A victory this weekend would be important in helping them rediscover their form and potentially move back into the Top Six.
For a club of Rockdale’s calibre and expectations, a finals position would be the bare minimum, making the remaining three rounds particularly important.
Wollongong Wolves, on the other hand, saw their losing streak continue last weekend against Sydney United 58.
With their finals hopes now effectively gone, pride is all that remains for the Wolves during the final stages of their 2026 NPL Men’s NSW campaign.
They will nevertheless be looking to finish strongly and potentially play spoiler to Rockdale’s finals ambitions.
Blacktown City FC vs UNSW FC
3:00pm, Sunday 16 August – Valentine Sports Park
Blacktown City will conclude Round 28 when they host UNSW FC at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.
Blacktown’s winning run came to an end last weekend when they were defeated 3-1 by NWS Spirit in an entertaining contest at Christie Park.
The famous NPL Men’s NSW club now sits four points outside the Top Six, meaning a victory against UNSW is essential if they are to keep their finals hopes alive.
With only three rounds remaining, Blacktown cannot afford to drop further points and will be looking to return to winning ways immediately.
Their opponents, meanwhile, sit three points below them in 14th position and have suffered three consecutive defeats, with their latest coming in a disappointing loss to Sydney Olympic.
UNSW will be looking to regroup and put together a late-season run as they aim to finish their first season in the NPL Men’s NSW competition on a high.
With Blacktown chasing finals football and UNSW looking to end their campaign positively, there is plenty at stake at Valentine Sports Park.
