NPL Men’s NSW Elimination Semi-Finals Preview

Finals football is upon us in the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW competition, with the Championship Series kicking off on Wednesday night and four teams preparing for two high-stakes Elimination Semi-Finals.

There is no room for error from this point forward.

For Marconi Stallions, NWS Spirit FC, Sutherland Sharks and Manly United, Wednesday night represents an opportunity to keep their Championship dreams alive, with the two winners progressing to Sunday’s Preliminary Finals.

All matches will be shown live and exclusive only on Football NSW’s YouTube channel. 

Marconi Stallions v NWS Spirit FC

7:30pm, Wednesday 2 September – Marconi Stadium

It is a rapid rematch between two familiar opponents, with NWS Spirit returning to Marconi Stadium on Wednesday night to take on the Marconi Stallions just three days after their 1-1 draw in the final round of the regular season.

Sunday’s encounter saw a number of changes across both squads, and there could be just as many for this crucial knockout fixture.

Marconi coach Peter Tsekenis rested a number of key players, including George Daniel, Tyren Burnie, Jack Armson, Franco Maya and Damian Tsekenis, with all expected to return to the starting line-up.

The Stallions were not at their best on Sunday, but with those changes expected to strengthen the side, this could be a very different contest.

After a run of four straight defeats and subsequently losing the Premiership because of that dip in form, Marconi have now gone three games without defeat and appear to have rediscovered some of the style that made them such a dangerous side earlier in the season.

Spirit showed on Sunday that they can cause problems, surprising the Stallions with an aggressive high press that ultimately led to the opening goal.

However, Serge Malfara’s side also had a number of players unavailable.

Shoki Yoshida and Callum Kealy remain out for the season, while Andre Takami and Kosta Petratos were both serving suspensions.

The latter two will return for Wednesday night’s clash, giving Spirit some much-needed depth for what is effectively a season-defining fixture.

Spirit’s campaign appeared to be over just a month ago, but they managed to completely turn their form around.

Three consecutive wins, followed by Sunday’s valuable point, were enough to squeeze them into sixth place and secure back-to-back finals appearances.

Now they face the side they drew with only days ago, but this time there is considerably more at stake.

The previous meeting in May provides further intrigue.

With Marconi flying at the time, the Stallions eased past Spirit 3-0 at Christie Park, with Damian Tsekenis scoring a brace and Jack Armson adding the other.

Spirit will be hoping Wednesday night tells a very different story.

With both sides knowing that defeat means the end of their season, expect a vastly different contest to the one played on Sunday.

Sutherland Sharks v Manly United

7:30pm, Wednesday 2 September – Seymour Shaw

A full house is expected at Seymour Shaw on Wednesday night as Sutherland Sharks take on Manly United in another huge Elimination Semi-Final.

Having secured fourth spot and their place in the Australian Championship, the Sharks can now turn their full attention towards the battle for silverware and a place in the Preliminary Finals.

It has been quite the turnaround for David Perkovic’s side.

From a team that spent part of the season battling towards the wrong end of the table to securing finals football and Australian Championship qualification, the Sharks have produced an impressive second half of the campaign.

They were defeated 2-1 by SD Raiders in their final regular-season match, but Perkovic used the opportunity to give a number of young talented players valuable minutes while managing the workload of his more experienced stars.

Danijel Nizic has been in excellent form between the sticks for Perkovic’s side throughout 2026, while Nick Olsen leads the club’s scoring charts with 12 goals.

Their form of late has been somewhat inconsistent, with three defeats in their last 10 matches, but one of those losses came against Wednesday night’s opponents.

In fact, the Sharks have been defeated by Manly twice this season, with the Northern Beaches side also overcoming Sutherland in the Australia Cup Qualifiers.

That recent history will give Manly plenty of confidence heading into Seymour Shaw.

It has been an incredible season for Vladimir Knezevic and Manly United.

A side tipped by many to be headed for relegation at the beginning of the campaign has done the unthinkable and qualified for the finals.

Even missing a number of key players, Knezevic’s side travelled down the coast on Sunday to take on Wollongong Wolves knowing they had to win to secure a place in the Top Six.

They did exactly that — and did it emphatically.

Manly dismantled the Wolves 4-0, producing a performance full of confidence and composure despite the enormous pressure surrounding the fixture.

That ability to deal with the occasion means they come into this clash with nothing to lose and the freedom to play their football.

Players such as Saxon Hillyer, Luke Nieuwenhof and Jesse Piriz have been outstanding for United throughout the campaign, and another big performance from that group could be crucial against their more fancied opponents.

The Sharks won the first clash between the two sides back in Round 8, but as mentioned, Manly have responded by winning their last two encounters.

Now, there is no room for error.

One team will advance to Sunday’s Preliminary Final.

The other will see its remarkable 2026 campaign come to an end.

Preliminary Finals

The winners of both Elimination Semi-Finals will secure their place in Sunday’s Preliminary Finals, where the top two teams from the regular season will enter the Championship Series.

The 2026 Premiers, APIA Leichhardt FC, will host the lowest-ranked Elimination Semi-Final winner at Lambert Park at 4:00pm.

Meanwhile, Sydney United 58 will face the highest-ranked Elimination Semi-Final winner at Sydney United Sports Centre at 2:00pm.

With a place in the Grand Final at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium ultimately awaiting the two Preliminary Final winners, the road to Championship glory begins on Wednesday night.

There are no second chances from here.
