Sydney United 58 continued their sensational start to the 2026 campaign, maintaining their perfect and undefeated record with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over SD Raiders at Ernie Smith Reserve on Saturday evening.

With five wins from five matches, United 58 remain one of the competition’s form teams, and it was a moment of brilliance from Tomoki Wada that ultimately preserved their flawless run.

In a tightly contested encounter where clear chances were limited, set pieces proved the most dangerous avenue for both sides. The decisive moment arrived in spectacular fashion when Wada produced a stunning free kick that proved the difference between the two teams.

The Raiders created the first opportunity of the match as early as the second minute when Sebastian Malfara stepped up to take a free kick, but his effort drifted wide of the left post.

Sydney United 58 soon had a set piece opportunity of their own — and they made it count in spectacular style.

The breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute when Tomoki Wada lined up a free kick near the right flank. From long range and an extremely tight angle, the midfielder delivered a moment of magic, curling the ball into the top left corner to leave players and spectators stunned and give the visitors a crucial 1–0 lead.

It proved to be a strike worthy of winning any match.

The next major opportunity again came from a dead-ball situation, this time for the home side. Martin Fernandez unleashed a powerful free kick destined for the bottom left corner, but Adam Pavlesic produced a sharp diving save to preserve United 58’s advantage.

The Raiders continued to push for an equaliser after the break and came close in the 56th minute when Mihael Marcic rose highest to meet a corner with a strong header. However, Bailey Rule was perfectly positioned on the line to clear the danger and keep the visitors in front.

Another golden opportunity fell the Raiders’ way in the 68th minute when the ball dropped kindly for Jakob Malbasa inside the penalty area. But the forward was unable to make clean contact, and his tame effort was comfortably gathered by Pavlesic.

As the match moved toward its conclusion, the hosts’ task became even more difficult when Sebastian Malfara received two late yellow cards, the first in the 86th minute and the second in the 90+1st minute, reducing the Raiders to ten men.

Even then, the drama was not over.

In the 90+5th minute, a dangerous low corner flashed across the face of goal and sparked a frantic goalmouth scramble that threatened to snatch a late equaliser for the Raiders. However, Sydney United 58 held their nerve under pressure, clearing the danger and sealing a narrow but vital victory.

The result ensures Sydney United 58 remain unbeaten with a perfect five wins from five matches, continuing their outstanding early-season momentum as they extend one of the strongest starts in the competition.

Wada’s moment of brilliance ultimately proved decisive, ensuring United 58’s flawless run rolls on.
