Spirit Shatter Barton Park Fortress with Clinical 3–0 Win

Barton Park is no longer the fortress it once was for St George FC, as they slumped to back-to-back home defeats following a commanding 3–0 loss to a sharp and determined NWS Spirit FC outfit in Round 8 of the NPL Men’s NSW competition.
Responding emphatically after their own setback last week, NWS Spirit FC arrived with intent—and delivered a performance built on precision, pace, and ruthless execution to leave the home side reeling.
St George showed early promise, nearly opening the scoring in the 15th minute when Evangelo Souris unleashed a curling long-range effort that forced a strong save from Christopher Marques.
But Spirit quickly responded.
In the 20th minute, Aiden Mostofi whipped in a superb cross from the left that found captain Grant Conwell, whose first-time volley flashed dangerously across the face of goal in a major warning sign for the hosts.
Moments later, St George came within inches of breaking the deadlock themselves. A perfectly delivered cross found Harry Keys in space, but his powerful strike was brilliantly denied by Marques, who stood tall to keep the scores level.
That save proved pivotal.
In the 25th minute, NWS Spirit struck with devastating efficiency. A perfectly weighted through ball split the St George defence, releasing Shoki Yoshida, who exploded forward with blistering pace from halfway. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, he showed composure to slot home and give the visitors a deserved lead.
Spirit didn’t let up.
Kosta Petratos threatened in the 35th minute with a near miss, but just a minute later, he produced a moment of brilliance. Stepping up for a free kick from distance after being introduced early, Petratos unleashed a stunning strike over the wall and into the back of the net, doubling the advantage despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts.
St George had a golden chance to respond just before the break. Jaden Casella’s pinpoint cross found Keys, whose header bounced down and rattled the crossbar, summing up a frustrating half for the home side.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly dampened after the restart, with Yoshida again threatening early in the second half, forcing another save as Spirit signalled their intent to stay on the front foot.
The result was sealed in the 81st minute through a slick combination between substitutes. Sam Armson delivered a perfectly weighted long ball to the back post, where Stavros Tserpes was on hand to calmly finish from close range, putting the game well beyond reach.
After the match, NWS Spirit FC head coach Sergio Malfara praised his side’s response and attention to detail, highlighting the standards required to remain at the top.
“We’re super proud of the team tonight,” he said.
“We had a really strong training week and lifted our standards. We reflected on the last couple of weeks and knew we had to improve in key moments.
“Today, the execution and the small details were excellent. We said during the week that if we want to go back-to-back, we need to be switched on when it matters—and tonight we showed that.”
For St George FC, it was another frustrating night at home. Head coach Raphael Marie pointed to costly moments early in the match as the turning point.
“It was similar to last week against Marconi—two moments hurt us early,” he said.
“We started well and probably could have scored, but overall it wasn’t our best performance.
“We’ll regroup and step up next week. We’ve got four away games coming, which is tough, but that’s the nature of the competition. I still have full faith in the boys despite tonight.”
With a clinical display away from home, NWS Spirit FC not only bounced back in style but also sent a strong message to the rest of the competition—while St George are left searching for answers as their home struggles continue.
