Saints Dig Deep To Keep Survival Hopes Alive

St George FC have kept their survival hopes alive after a remarkable 1-0 victory over Blacktown City in their penultimate fixture of the NPL Men’s NSW season.
The Saints faced a must-win contest as they continue their battle to avoid automatic relegation and secure a place in the promotion/relegation play-off, but they could hardly have been handed a tougher assignment against a Blacktown City side still chasing their own slim finals hopes.
Despite being reduced to 10 men for more than 70 minutes, St George stuck to their task in a gritty and courageous performance, with Jaden Casella’s early penalty rebound proving enough to secure all three points.
St George were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute when Casella was brought down inside the box.
The forward stepped up himself, but saw his initial effort saved by Blacktown goalkeeper Cayden Henderson, who could only parry the ball into Casella’s path.
The striker reacted quickest to fire home the rebound and give the hosts an early lead.
It was a tangle of legs with Caleb Jackson-Brown that led to the spot-kick, but Casella made no mistake with his second opportunity.
After their sizzling start, Blacktown settled into possession football to try and ease the Saints’ momentum, particularly through the middle of the park.
The stakes were enormous for St George.
A victory would mean a point in their final fixture of the season would be enough to condemn Sydney Olympic to automatic relegation and secure the Saints a place in the relegation play-off.
However, their task became considerably more difficult when goalkeeper James Husoy was adjudged to have fouled Alou Kuol.
Having denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, Husoy was shown a straight red card.
Justin Poon, who had returned to the side, was the unfortunate player sacrificed as Vedran Janjetovic came on to replace Husoy between the sticks.
The Saints were now reduced to 10 men with more than 70 minutes still to play.
If it wasn’t already a backs-to-the-wall contest before kick-off, it certainly was now.
Blacktown immediately increased the pressure.
Mark Rodic was forced to clear off the line in dramatic fashion from a Nick O’Brien header, with Janjetovic beaten.
The visitors were on the offensive and creating regular moments of danger inside the St George penalty area as the substitute goalkeeper settled into the contest.
Maksim Jez then saw an effort cannon off the post, with Janjetovic getting a vital touch to divert the ball onto the woodwork.
Blacktown came close again from another corner, with Nathan Grimaldi heading against the crossbar but unable to follow up.
The Saints’ goal was beginning to lead a charmed life.
The visitors were creating chance after chance and would have been frustrated not to have found an equaliser, while St George were showing enormous resilience to keep their narrow advantage intact.
The hosts could even have doubled their lead on the counter-attack when Isaac Cunningham cut inside from the left wing, only to see his effort blocked.
Kaidyn Wright then had an opportunity to finish the move, but Grimaldi threw himself into a desperate defensive challenge to deny him.
There was no further addition to the scoreboard as a breathless and action-packed first half came to a close, with the promise of even more drama after the break.
Blacktown resumed the second half on the front foot, with Kodai Tanaka seeing his effort deflected behind for a corner.
Mitch Mallia then came close with a dipping free-kick that slid just past the woodwork.
Janjetovic was called into action several times, repeatedly palming away dangerous efforts as Blacktown continued to press relentlessly for an equaliser.
St George were forced to rely on counter-attacks, and they managed to create several opportunities of their own without finding the decisive second goal.
The defending from the Saints was courageous, strong and effective as they continued to withstand wave after wave of Blacktown pressure.
Kuol came close to levelling when he headed just past the post, while another Blacktown opportunity was cleared off the line.
Quite how the match remained 1-0 as it entered the final stages was difficult to comprehend given the number of opportunities, desire and desperation shown by both sides.
Tensions boiled over in stoppage time when Grimaldi and Casella clashed, sparking a player scuffle.
Both players were shown yellow cards, Grimaldi for a reckless lunge and Casella for his reaction.
The final whistle eventually arrived, sparking huge relief for the Saints after more than 70 minutes of defending with 10 men.
For Blacktown City, the defeat ended their hopes of playing finals football in 2026.
For St George, the victory means their survival battle will go down to the final day should Sydney Olympic defeat Marconi tomorrow afternoon.
The Saints now have one final hurdle standing between themselves and a chance to retain their place in the NPL Men’s NSW competition.
