Wanderers Claim Derby Bragging Rights in 4-0 Victory Over Sydney FC

Western Sydney Wanderers claimed derby bragging rights in emphatic fashion, defeating Sydney FC 4-0 at Wanderers Football Park on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides entered the clash determined to secure three points on a humid afternoon, but it was the Wanderers who struck early and never looked back.
Sydney FC created the first opportunity of the match when Jordan Graoroski cushioned a header onto the crossbar from a right-sided delivery.
The Wanderers responded immediately, opening the scoring in the 7th minute. Goalkeeper Tristan Vidackovic angled a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Alaat Abdul-Rahman, who calmly clipped his finish into the net to make it 1-0.
Buoyed by the early goal, the Wanderers continued to press forward. Sydney FC goalkeeper Jared Williams was forced into two outstanding saves to deny Atiya Waraga and keep the deficit at one. Moments later, a cleverly worked corner routine saw the ball crash against the right post.
Sydney FC worked their way back into the contest, with Mitchell Glasson testing Vidackovic with a powerful strike that was well handled. The Sky Blues thought they had equalised soon after following neat build-up play around the box, but Glasson’s final touch before Graoroski finished was ruled offside.
The hosts threatened again on the counterattack, only for Tyler Williams to produce a crucial last-ditch tackle to prevent a second goal.
That second goal arrived in the 40th minute from a set piece. Oscar Moore stepped up and curled a superb free-kick into the bottom corner to give the Wanderers a commanding 2-0 lead at the break.
Sydney FC had an early opportunity in the second half to reduce the margin, but Graoroski fired his free-kick over the bar. At the other end, Waraga capitalised on loose passing and forced another sharp save from Williams.
The visitors continued to search for a way back, with Glasson cutting inside and shooting narrowly over. Sydney FC introduced last week’s match-winner Nickloas Alfaro in an attempt to spark a revival.
Instead, it was the Wanderers who delivered the decisive blow. In the 77th minute, substitute Harper Ryles launched a devastating counterattack and squared the ball for Awan Lual to tap home for 3-0.
Lual added his second and the Wanderers’ fourth in the 83rd minute. Ryles again played a key role, forcing an error before setting up the striker to fire home and seal a comprehensive derby victory.
Post-match, Wanderers coach Panni Nikas praised his squad’s collective performance.
“It was a good bounce back. We prepared well all week and they executed the game plan perfectly. All the boys, from the starting XI to the substitutes, are battling for spots and we ask them to come into games and contribute,” Nikas said.
Sydney FC coach Jimmy Van Weeren reflected on key moments.
“We were trying to be the dominant team in possession and showed some solid creativity, but we were punished in transition at important moments tonight,” Van Weeren said.
