NWS Spirit FC missed a late penalty against the Wollongong Wolves as the match finished in an exciting 0–0 draw in hot and steamy conditions at Macedonia Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves started the match strongly, with Flynn Madden delivering back-to-back corners and midfielder Felipe D’Agostini finding space outside the box before firing over the crossbar.

The first half developed into a tactical battle, with the Wolves defence holding firm despite missing suspended defender Dylan Ryan and injured Tate Russell, while young gun Ryan Lowe made his starting debut at right-back.

NWS Spirit FC went close to taking the lead in the 21st minute when Finn Ballard-McBride raced onto a ball over the top but put his shot wide.

The Wolves had a good chance to open the scoring in the 28th minute when D’Agostini surged forward from his own half before being tackled on the edge of the box. The ball eventually fell to winger Alex Masciovecchio, whose shot was saved by Spirit goalkeeper Christopher Marques.

Spirit began to dominate the latter stages of the half, with Shoki Yoshida proving a constant nuisance for the Wolves defence. Andre Takami also came close with a clever free kick that drifted just wide of Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky’s near post.

Both sides continued to attack as the match approached half-time, but the first half ended scoreless.

The Wolves began the second half strongly, with Sebastian Hernandez finding space on the left and whipping in a dangerous cross that was met by Masciovecchio, whose header went straight at the Spirit goalkeeper.

Spirit’s best chance of the early second half came in the 55th minute when Zayne Ahluwalia delivered a dangerous free kick from the right flank. The Wolves defence cleared the ball, but Yoshida followed up with a shot that drifted just wide.

Wollongong began to take control of the half, with centre-back Banri Kanaizumi and midfielder Marcus Beattie both coming close with headers. D’Agostini also forced a strong save from Marques after combining well with Masciovecchio.

The second half continued with both sides playing attacking football and creating plenty of chances.

Spirit had a golden opportunity to win the game in the second minute of injury time when a contentious foul by Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky on substitute Thomas Mason resulted in a penalty.

Former Wolves player Andre Takami stepped up but dragged his penalty wide of the left post, leaving the match to finish in an entertaining 0–0 draw.

Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky said it was an open game of football, with both sides creating plenty of chances.

“It is disappointing not to come away with all three points, but we put together a good performance,” Solsky said.

“Spirit had chances, we had chances, and the game was better than a scoreless draw usually is.”

NWS Spirit captain Grant Cornwell reflected on the contest and said the Wolves are always a difficult opponent.

“It is always tough coming down to Wollongong and we always know it is going to be a hard game,” Cornwell said.

“We battled well and had an opportunity with the penalty to win the game. Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.”

The Wolves travel in Round 7 to face St George City at Penshurst Park, while NWS Spirit host Rockdale Ilinden on Saturday night at Christie Park.
