UNSW FC brought the Wollongong Wolves’ remarkable 12-match unbeaten run to an end with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at The Village Green on Saturday afternoon.

Jack Fulton’s second-half penalty proved the difference in a fiercely contested encounter as UNSW FC maintained their unbeaten record on home soil.

UNSW FC entered the match in strong form, coming off an impressive victory against Sydney United 58 FC, while the Wollongong Wolves were full of confidence on the back of an incredible 12-match unbeaten run and having not lost since February.

The match started at a fast pace with both sides playing attacking football in an open contest in warm conditions at The Village Green.

UNSW FC had the best opportunity of the early exchanges, with Emilio Vinci delivering a cross from the left that found Jack Fulton inside the 18-yard box. Fulton did well to bring the ball down, beat the Wolves defence, and get a shot away. However, his shot was brilliantly saved by Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky, who got down low to his right to make a smart save.

Solsky was called into action again soon after in the 20th minute when UNSW FC star Jyden Harb beat the offside trap and ran through on goal. The Wolves goalkeeper raced off his line and forced Harb wide, closing down the angle and making a save to force a corner.

UNSW FC were starting to take control of the game, and the Wolves were their own worst enemy in a moment of madness when Solsky came out to collect a cross and collided with teammate Dylan Ryan. Luckily for the Wolves, both players were OK to continue.

The Wolves’ best chance came in the 29th minute when midfielder Flynn Madden forced UNSW FC goalkeeper Tristan Prendergast into a diving save after a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box.

Wollongong started to settle into the match, and winger Sebastian Hernandez missed a guilt-edged chance in the 35th minute when he pulled his left-footed shot wide after a flick-on header from Marcus Beattie following a cross from young gun Lucas Trajcevski.

The Wollongong defence was being kept busy, and centre-back Banri Kanaizumi produced an outstanding goal-line block after a shot from UNSW attacker Jack Fulton.

Wolves midfielder Marcus Beattie nearly produced a moment of magic in the 42nd minute after he beat numerous UNSW FC defenders and unleashed a shot from well outside the 18-yard box. However, his shot sailed over the bar.

The first half came to a close with UNSW FC registering five shots with three on target, while the Wolves had just three shots, all failing to hit the target.

UNSW FC made a fast start to the second half with Harb unleashing a rocket from well outside the 18-yard box after some wonderful skill, with Solsky doing well to get a fingertip on the shot and force it over the bar.

The resulting corner caused chaos in the Wolves defence, with Oliver Puflett heading the ball down into the ground and Wollongong managing to clear after a goal-mouth scramble.

The Wolves thought they might have had a penalty after Trajcevski collided with UNSW FC captain Liam Wood after a good ball into the box from Hernandez following a brilliant switch from Beattie. However, referee Rowan Fisher waved play on.

UNSW FC were starting to create the better chances as the second half went on, with Solsky being kept busy, making numerous saves in quick succession.

The home side were rewarded for their dominance when they took the lead in the 58th minute via a penalty from Fulton.

Unfortunately for Wolves goalkeeper Solsky, he went from hero to villain after he brought down defender Emilio Vinci in the box following some neat and intricate play between Vinci and Harb.

The goal sparked the Wolves into life, with the away side enjoying a better spell of possession, with captain Lachlan Scott a constant threat for the UNSW FC defence.

The Wolves continued to create half chances as the second half continued, with UNSW FC managing the game well and holding strong in defence.

UNSW FC went close to scoring a second goal against the run of play in the 76th minute when Antony Barbic put a good ball into the box that was cleared desperately by Wolves defender Banri Kanaizumi.

The Wolves’ pressure was nearly rewarded in the 79th minute when UNSW FC goalkeeper Tristan Prendergast misjudged a cross from Hernandez. The ball fell to Wollongong defender Sebastian Duarte, however his shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Conor Quilligan.

Wollongong were inches away from scoring an equalising goal in the closing minutes after Beattie found himself unmarked at the back post following a delightful ball from substitute Felipe D’Agostini. Beattie headed the ball just wide as the Wolves continued to chase the game.

Wollongong continued to push numbers forward; however, it was UNSW FC who went close to doubling their lead when Harb was through on goal, with Solsky making an important save to keep his side in the game.

In the end, UNSW FC held on for a hard-fought 1-0 win as their impressive unbeaten home record continued, while the Wolves lost their first game since February as their 12-match undefeated run came to an end.
