fnsw-2025-npl-nsw-preview-mens-web-round-29

The NPL Men’s NSW Premiership could be decided this weekend, with NWS Spirit needing just one more victory to secure a historic title. Elsewhere, the two of the bottom-four will face each other as they look to secure safety, while sixth and seventh will battle it out for the last finals position.

Sydney FC vs Blacktown City

7:30pm, Friday 22 August, Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre

Sydney FC will open the penultimate round of the competition when hosting Blacktown City at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre.

The Sky Blues suffered defeat last weekend to Marconi Stallions, as they end the season in a mid-table position, clear of the relegation battle but too far off the top six.

Blacktown, however, need just a point this weekend to secure a spot in the finals campaign, with their dramatic win over Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend seeing them move three points clear of Sydney United 58 in sixth and six points clear of Sydney Olympic in seventh.

They will be looking to secure their spot when facing Sydney on Friday night.

Match of the Round
Sutherland Sharks FC vs Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC

4:00pm, Saturday 23 August, Seymour Shaw

Sutherland Sharks will take on Mt Druitt Town Rangers in a mouthwatering relegation battle at Seymour Shaw to open Saturday’s fixtures.

The Sharks come into this match fourth-bottom, but only two points in front of Mt Druitt, who are second last.

A win for the away side this weekend would therefore see them leapfrog their opponents, and possible push the Sharks into the relegation playoff spot, with just one match to go.

Meanwhile, a win for the home team would mean they’re safe in the NPL Men’s NSW competition for another year, taking them five points clear of Mt Druitt, who would now be in a precarious position heading into the final round.

It’s all to play for in front of what promises to be a hefty crowd at Seymour Shaw on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking to give everything to ensure their place in this famous league for 2026.

NWS Spirit FC vs Central Coast Mariners FC

5:30pm, Saturday 23 August, Christie Park

Fresh off their 3-0 victory over St Goerge FC on Tuesday, NWS Spirit will take on Central Coast Mariners this weekend, with a win securing them the NPL Men’s NSW Premiership.

Spirits’ last match was yet another comprehensive victory, with a Yu Okubo brace and a Takumi Ofuka goal making it an astonishing eight games unbeaten for the league leaders.

Now four points off APIA Leichhardt and Marconi Stallions, three points this weekend would see Spirit win a historic title at home, in front of what promises to be a standout crowd at Christie Park.

It won’t be easy for Spirit, however, with Central Coast Mariners firmly in a relegation battle, currently in third-bottom, and the away side will give everything they have to secure another positive result.

But it’s the league leaders who will be favourites to pick up their 20th win of the campaign, in what promises to be an exhilarating Saturday evening fixture.

APIA Leichhardt FC vs St George City FA

6:00pm, Saturday 23 August, Lambert Park

APIA Leichhardt will face off against St George City in their last home match of the regular season later on Saturday evening.

The home side for this match picked up a comprehensive victory last weekend, prevailing 5-0 over Sutherland thanks to goals from Rory Jordan, Franco Farinella, Seiya Kambayashi and a late brace from Presley Ortiz.

With Spirit pulling ahead in the title battle, APIA’s focus will be firmly on securing second place on the table, with a win here necessary, as they are level on points with Marconi Stallions, who are in third.

Their opponents will be fired up, but considering they’re all but out of finals contention, this will be a match more for pride than placement for St George City.

Wollongong Wolves FC vs Marconi Stallions FC

7:00pm, Saturday 23 August, WIN Stadium

Wollongong Wolves will host Marconi Stallions in an intriguing Saturday night fixture at WIN Stadium.

The Wolves are in eighth, but are still four points off the top six, meaning finals, while unlikely, is still plausible.

However, they will need to win this weekend, and hope results go their way, to have a chance heading into the final round, and will find that a difficult task against Marconi Stallions, who have been beaten only six times this season.

Marconi will be motivated to secure victory as they push to overtake APIA and take second on the ladder, making this an exciting match-up down Sydney’s South Coast.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC vs St George FC

7:00pm, Saturday 23 August, Wanderers Football Park

Western Sydney Wanderers will take on St George FC in the most important match of their season on Saturday night.

The Wanderers are currently bottom of the ladder, two points off second-bottom and four points off safety.

If they are to lose this match, and Mt Druitt beat Sutherland Sharks, their relegation from the NPL Men’s NSW competition would be confirmed.

However, a win would, depending on other results, take them off the bottom of the ladder, and possibly within one point of the Central Coast Mariners, setting up a blockbuster final-day clash between the two A-League academy sides.

Essentially, anything could happen this weekend, but for the Wanderers, Saturday night is  a must-win game as they look to do everything they can to avoid relegation to the League One Men’s competition.

Rockdale Ilinden FC vs Manly United FC

3:00pm, Sunday 24 August, Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre

Rockdale Ilinden will take on Manly United on Sunday afternoon at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre.

Rockdale’s last four games have all ended in draws, will the last two requiring late goals to secure points against Central Coast Mariners and Sydney Olympic respectively.

The home side for this match need to find form to take into finals, and will be looking to do so this weekend against a Manly United side playing for pride.

Captain Alec Urosevski will be aiming to return to the scoring charts, having not found the back of the net in six games, with that streak corresponding with six matches without a win for Rockdale.

Sydney United 58 FC vs Sydney Olympic FC

3:00pm, Sunday 24 August, Sydney United Sports Centre

Sydney United 58 will face off against Sydney Olympic in an exhilarating clash for sixth spot on Sunday afternoon.

United 58 currently hold the cherished last finals spot, sitting three points ahead of Sydney Olympic in sixth.

A win for the home side would secure their spot in the NPL Men’s NSW finals, while a draw would also be favourable heading into the last round of the season.

A loss, meanwhile, would see Sydney Olympic jump United 58 – with the away side having vastly superior goal difference.

Like many other games this weekend, it truly is all to play for, with both sides looking to give everything to extend their season into the storied NPL Men’s NSW finals campaign.
