A late Patrick Antelmi strike has helped Sydney United 58 to victory against fierce rivals Bonnyrigg White Eagles at Sydney United Sports Centre on Saturday.
Antelmi’s winner stretched third placed United 58’s undefeated streak to five matches and cuts the gap to second placed Sydney Olympic to only one point.
An early goal to Adrian Vlastelica had the home side in front inside the first 10 minutes.
Bonnyrigg found a way back into the match through their captain Ray Miller before substitute Patrick Antelmi found the winner in the dying stages of the game.
It was the fifth straight win for Miro Vlastelica’s side as they continue their push for the premiership.
After only 10 minutes United hit the front after a Matt Sim corner found the head of Vlastelica who powered home the ball at the back post.
It was his first goal for his new club United 58 as the big defender made his presence felt early in the match.
Bonnyrigg went the other way and almost equalised through Tynan Diaz but Thomas Manos made a fine save low to his right.
Tariq Maia then had a chance on 18 minutes but a strong hand from Chronopoulos kept the midfielder’s effort out.
On 25 minutes it was the away side’s turn to threaten, Aaron Avery this time let fly, forcing Manos into another big save.
Four minutes later Shervin Adeli should’ve had Bonnyrigg level.
Again, Avery had a shot from distance with the ball falling at Adeli’s feet. The White Eagles striker couldn’t sort his feet out in time as Manos held easily.
Yianni Perkatis had a shot for United but Chronopoulos was up to the task.
On 33 minutes the White Eagles threatened again, this time Avery got onto the end of a Sam Gallaway cross. The midfielder’s effort seemed destined for goal before a goal line clearance from the United defence.
Only two minutes later Panni Nikas should’ve doubled the home side lead but he scuffed his effort wide.
The White Eagles came out pumped up for the second period and Jewook Woo went close, shooting just over the goal.
Nikas was in the thick of it a minute later but he couldn’t beat Chronopoulos with his header.
Again, the White Eagles pushed forward as midfield wizard Ray Miller weaved his way through
Miller had the goal his performance deserved on 65 minutes.
A neat flick by substitute Asmir Kadric had Bradie Smith crossing a delightful ball to the back post for the Bonnyrigg captain who headed home.
Five minutes later and Chris Payne should’ve had United back in front.
One on one with Chronopolous, he shot poorly, allowing the Bonnyrigg custodian to make a good save.
In the 73rd minute United threatened again, this time Patrick Antelmi forcing Chronopoulos into a save.
Five minutes from the end Antlemi had United level.
Fine work by Christian Gonzalez down the left saw him beat two defenders before finding Antelmi at the far post who tapped the ball home.
A deflated White Eagles couldn’t find their second equaliser of the game in the final moments.

A brilliant Chris Payne double has helped Sydney United 58 to a 3-1 victory against Hakoah Sydney City East at Sydney United Sports Centre on Saturday.
The win stretches The Reds winning streak to four with Miro Vlastelica’s side leapfrogging Blacktown City to take third place.
Payne was in inspired form for the home side with his goals in either half, alongside a Mat Sim strike, the difference for United 58 against a determined Hakoah outfit.
The visitors netted only six minutes into the contest through Anthony Frangie, but it would prove to be only a brief moment on top for Hakoah.
Payne levelled after 26 minutes before he found the net again alongside Sim in the second half to secure the win.
Gavin Rae’s Hakoah side raced out of the block from the opening whistle taking only one serious attack to get on the scoreboard.
Anthony Frangie broke free of his marker to head home after a well delivered corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
United 58 looked to fire back almost instantly and fired narrowly right of the post with consecutive efforts from Panny Nikas and Matt Sim.
A brilliant ball from Frangie in the 13th minute gave Hakoah a brilliant chance to double their lead but United 58 shot stopper was able to deny striker Amaury Gauthier one-on-one.
The home side began to settle into the match and it was obvious as they pushed their opponents deep into their own half.
In the 26th minute United 58 capitalised as Chris Payne pinched the ball off a Hakoah defender inside the penalty area before firing into the net from close range to level the scores at 1-1.
A powerful Orchard half volley from 30 yards out forced Manos into action but the shot sailed ever so marginally wide.
It would be the final action of the half as the two sides went into the break on level pegging.
Sydney United got off to a fast start in the second stanza and were unlucky not to have taken the lead in the 50th minute when James Coombes made and incredible last ditch clearance to deny Payne.
However, it wouldn’t be long until they did find the net again.
Bouzanis made an incredible one-on-one save to deny Chris Payne in the 58th minute but it was cleaned up by Sim who dribbled back into the box before firing past a scrambling shot stopper to make it 2-1.
Hakoah were desperate to equalise and had a flurry of chances in quick succession which all sailed wide of the goal.
With the visitors pushed high, United 58 took advantage and stretched their lead to 3-1 in the 75th minute.
Patrick Antelmi’s driving shot from just inside the penalty area cannoned off the upright and Payne was on hand to tap it in from only two yards out.
Hakoah pushed on as the minutes ticked away and were denied in the 77th minute as Manos made a brilliant double save after efforts by Frangie and then Cox.
In the 89th minute Hakoah forced another brilliant diving save from Manos who refused to be beaten
Despite their efforts it wasn’t to be for Hakoah with United 58 holding out until the final whistle to secure all three points.
A beaming Vlastelica praised his side’s mindset after they fought back from conceding an early goal.
“The boys showed a lot of character. As a team are in a good space at the moment and the boys are enjoying their football which makes everything much easier,” he said.
“We adjusted things at half time because we needed to keep the ball a bit more. It made a big difference after the break and played a big part in getting the win.
“The most important thing for me is that we are putting in good performances each week and so far the rewards have come.”
Hakoah boss Rae rued yet another defeat after giving up a lead.
“Once again we just couldn’t keep it together for 90 minutes and we paid the price,” he said.
“Our first half I was really impressed with but in the second we gave up some sloppy goals and weren’t able to get back into the contest.
“It is very frustrating because I know the team can take it to any team in the competition. However until we can maintain our performance for the full 90 minutes we are at risk of results like we have had in recent weeks.”

Two goals in the final five minutes has helped Sydney United 58 to a dramatic 3-1 victory against Wollongong Wolves at WIN Stadium on Sunday.
It was a frantic end to the match as Goals in the 86th and 90th minute to substitutes Patrick Antelmi and Sam Perre wrapped up the three points for the visitors and their third win in as many games.
For the Wolves, it was a frustrating afternoon at the office, with the side creating numerous chances but failing to take them and were punished as a result.
The victory maintains United 58’s hold on third position on the ladder one point ahead Blacktown City who have a game in hand.
The hosts would open the scoring in the 18th minute after a strong start.
Yuzo Tashiro headed home a well-placed cross from Brendan Griffin to give Wollongong a 1-0 lead.
The Wolves would dominate the offensive chances in the opening half and would come agonisngly close to pulling two goals ahead in the 44th minute when Tashiro linked up with Peter Simonoski to give the young forward a chance to fire the hosts ahead.
But Simonoski chose to push the ball back towards Tashiro instead of fire at the goal, allowing Adrian Vlastelica to storm in and remove the potential danger.
United 58 were unwilling to lie down after going behind early on and they pulled themselves back into the match on the stroke of half-time.
A great pass into the box from Glen Trifiro found the feet of Chris Payne, who tapped his effort past Wolves shot-stopper Justin Pasfield to level the scores and pick up his eighth goal of the league campaign.
Despite going into the break on equal terms, Sydney United 58 came out seeking goals in the second half.
Panny Nikas caused a number of issues for the Wolves defence due to his long-range efforts which tested the keeping mettle of Pasfield, who was forced to work overtime to keep Wollongong in the match.
Wollongong almost forced their way into the lead in the 80th minute
However, a Luke Wilkshire cross found the head of Simonoski but the striker was unable to direct his effort on goal.
The visitors’ persistence would finally pay off in the 86th minute when a momentary lapse in the Wollongong defence allowed substitute Antelmi who fired in off the woodwork to give United 58 the lead with only four minutes left on the clock.
Desperate to grab a point from the match, Wollongong threw everyone forward but it left the door open at the back and United 58 capitalised when Perre finished a slick pass from Nikas to make it 3-1.
Sydney United 58 coach Miro Vlastelica believes the win will help improve the confidence shown by the side as they head into the final stages of the regular season.
“It’s massive. Every week is massive for us,” he said.
“We’ve set ourselves targets and little goals, and if we can keep picking up points especially in places like Wollongong, it’s good for us.
“The biggest thing for me at the moment is that the boys are enjoying their football and looking forward to each week and it’s good.”
Meanwhile, Wollongong coach Jacob Timpano was disappointed in the final result, but thought the Wolves were the better of the two sides.
“I thought we had the better chances throughout the match… but we didn’t take them and we got punished. That’s the way it goes,” he said.
“On the balance of it, with ten to go we probably looked like the only team winning the match.
“But credit to United, they have some classy players and they make you pay and they did today.”

Sydney United 58 cruised to a 3-1 win against Sutherland Sharks at Sydney United Sports Centre on Saturday night.
Goals to Glen Trifiro, new recruit Tariq Mair, and Mathew Sim helped the home side collect all three points in their second three goal effort in as many weeks.
Nick Littler netted a late goal for Sutherland but it proved to be mere consolation for Grant Lee’s side.
United almost opened up the Sharks defence inside the first minute, however Sam Perre’s cross had too much on it and fizzed across the face of goal from a Panny Nikas lay-off.
Mathew Sim then sent in a tantalising cross that eluded his team mates with no-one quick enough to tap home.
The home side were on the offensive and Chris Payne had a shot blocked by Sharks keeper Ryan Norval. the Sutherland keeper was called into action moments later when he denied a curling effort from Trifiro.
Perre forced a save out of Norval in the 15th minute for yet another United corner. Sutherland were coping with the pressure but they were yet to muster an effort of their own at the other end.
The Blues were struggling to break out of their half and the long balls forward were easy pickings for the United defence.
A Jacob Tratt free-kick was Sutherland’s first real chance on goal but his effort sailed over the bar.
A neat short corner routine from United saw Nikas centre to Trifiro some 25-yards out, and his rasping effort certainly warmed the hands of the Sharks’ gloveman.
Tratt had another free-kick but once again he failed to convert after a save from Manos.
Despite their early domination, United had nothing to show for it at the break with both sides going into the sheds locked at 0-0.
Sutherland had an appeal for a penalty waved away on the resumption when Joshua Da Silva went down in the area. Their shouts falling on deaf ears and play continued but it was a positive starts for the visitors.
Da Silva forced a fine save out of Manos when striking a fierce left-footer from 30-yards out that swirled and dipped in the air.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when a dipping Nikas free-kick rattled the bar and fell invitingly for Trifiro to rifle home. It was little more than United deserved but was well taken by the midfielder.
Adrian Vranic attempted to level the scores in the 62nd minute but screwed his shot wide of the upright in reply as the reds pushed to extend their lead and left gaps at the back.
Nikas was unlucky not to find himself on the scoresheet with a curling attempt that crept the wrong side of the post in the 66th minute.
Tariq Mair added a second for United 58 with a thunderous shot from 25-yards leaving Norval with no hope.
Nikas chipped over the defence for substitute Patrick Antelmi who attempted to lob Norval but the ‘keeper just managed to get a fingertip to the ball.
Sim added the third for United when a defensive slip saw him tap home into an empty net to put the result beyond any doubt.
Sutherland hadn’t played badly but they had been out-enthused by a very determined Sydney United 58.
Sutherland did manage a consolation goal when Nick Littler netted after a Tratt free-kick was pushed clear by Manos but a quick-fire centre left him wrong-footed and stranded to find the central defender lurking with intent at the back stick to poke home.
A downtrodden Sharks coach Grant Lee rued the mistakes which cost his side the game.
“It’s what we’ve been saying all year. It’s our naivety that is costing us at critical times in games,” he said.
“We make stupid mistakes when the game is in the balance.
“It must sound like a broken record but it’s the same stupid errors in games.”
Miro Vlastelica praised a much improved second half performance from his United 58 side.
“I felt we dominated the first-half of the game and we could have done a lot better in the final third,” he said.
“We had a lot of chances, but we came in at half-time, had a char and adjusted a few minor things and it paid dividends in the end.
“The boys worked hard as they have all week and we take each week at a time. We will just keep doing what we are doing and see where it take us.”
