Round 21 Review – NPL Men’s NSW

Let’s take a look back at all the action from Round 20 of the National Premier Leagues NSW competition.
Sydney FC 1 v Sydney United 58 0 @ Ilinden Sports Centre
Sydney FC have moved in sight of the Top Six after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sydney United 58 in wet conditions at home, with Zac Fowler’s second-half goal proving decisive in a match where the visitors dominated possession and created several early chances but failed to convert.
Despite being under pressure for long periods, Sydney FC defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Alexander Zaverdinos making key saves, before Fowler struck in the 67th minute to secure the Sky Blues’ fourth win in six games and continue their push up the ladder.
UNSW FC 1 v Sutherland Sharks 3 @ The Village Green
Sutherland Sharks came from a tight contest to secure a 3-1 win over UNSW FC, with Tariq Maia producing the decisive moment in stoppage time after spotting the goalkeeper off his line and scoring from halfway.
The Sharks had earlier taken the lead through Richard Shoueiki before UNSW equalised just before half-time, but second-half pressure and Maia’s late brilliance ultimately sealed the result for the away side.
WSW 3 v Manly United 3 @ Wanderers Football Park
Western Sydney Wanderers and Manly United played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in a chaotic, end-to-end contest featuring six goals and stoppage-time drama.
Manly twice led through Jesse Piriz and Samuel Griffiths, but Awan Lual kept the Wanderers in the game with a brace, including a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, while both sides had late chances to win it in a frantic finish that saw a final effort rebound off the woodwork.
SD Raiders FC 3 v St George City 1 @ Ernie Smith Reserve
SD Raiders FC produced a strong 3-1 comeback win over St George City FA at Ernie Smith Reserve in wet conditions, overcoming a first-half deficit in an entertaining and physical contest.
After both sides traded early chances, St George City took the lead through Oscar Gultekin following a well-worked move and went into the break ahead after a competitive opening 45 minutes. However, SD Raiders lifted after the restart, with Martin Fernandez equalising from the penalty spot before a superb strike from Luka Knezevic completed the turnaround.
The hosts then sealed the result late through a set-piece finish from substitute Lachlan McGrath, securing a deserved victory after a strong second-half display.
NWS Spirit FC 2 v Wollongong Wolves 0 @ Christie Park
NWS Spirit FC strengthened their push for a place in the finals with a deserved 2-0 victory over the Wollongong Wolves at Christie Park on Saturday night.
A first-half brace from Shoki Yoshida proved decisive as NWS Spirit inflicted a fifth consecutive defeat on the out-of-form Wolves, who remain clinging to a top-six position despite a much-improved second-half performance.
St George FC 1 v Sydney Olympic 2 @ Barton Park
Sydney Olympic claimed a vital 2-1 away win over St George FC in a tense relegation battle at Barton Park, with Panayioti Armenakas opening the scoring from distance before St George fought back through Mark Rodic in the second half.
However, Olympic found the decisive moment late on as Armenakas turned provider for Bailey Callaghan to bundle home the winner, sealing a crucial three points in a tight, rain-affected contest where both sides had chances but Olympic proved more clinical in key moments.
Marconi 2 v Blacktown City 0 @ Marconi Stadium
The Marconi Stallions strengthened their Premiership push with a professional 2-0 win over Blacktown City at Marconi Stadium, with Jack Armson opening the scoring before Damian Tsekenis added a second to move to the top of the Golden Boot race.
Despite early pressure from Marconi and a strong defensive effort from City, the hosts eventually broke through in the first half and maintained control for long periods, before sealing the result after the break.
Blacktown City briefly threatened a comeback with a strong spell around the hour mark, but Marconi’s quality in both boxes proved decisive as they extended their unbeaten run and deepened City’s relegation concerns. The only sore point was the sending off of Anton Mlinaric who was given his marching orders late in the second half for the hosts.
APIA 0 v Rockdale Ilinden 2 @ Lambert Park
Rockdale Ilinden delivered a dominant and disciplined 2-0 away victory over APIA Leichhardt at Lambert Park, controlling the contest from the outset with their aggressive press, set-piece threat and attacking intensity.
After a series of early chances and sustained pressure, Lachlan Griffiths opened the scoring with a powerful header from a corner, before APIA struggled to create clear opportunities against a well-organised defence. Rockdale continued to dictate the tempo in the second half and sealed the win in the 75th minute through Moudi Najjar, finishing off a sharp attacking move to secure a convincing and well-deserved three points on the road.
