Manly United may only have one PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Men’s title to their name, but they remain a crucial part of the makeup of the New South Wales’ football tradition.
The product of a number of amalgamations over the year, Manly has come to represent the proud region of Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
Former first team manager Col May was there through all the amalgamations and was on hand to do whatever was needed to assist the first-team coaches with whatever the needed.
The club came into existence as it is known today at the end of the 1991 season and changing its name to the current Manly United in 2004 when it was promoted back to the state Premier League.
“I’m not the team-manager this year, I’ve given it up, but I’m still around to help them out,” May said.
“It was a lot of just helping out the coach on match day, sorting the drinks for the players and making sure they have the right numbers in the match book and make sure the player are wearing the right numbers.”
May first got involved in football for his kids, but he has stayed even beyond their involvement in the club.
“I’ve just stayed on. It’s something in the blood,” May said.
“I don’t have the kids involved anymore, but I just wanted to stay involved. It’s been an outlet for me, it’s something to do.
“I’ve been in Manly for 14 or 15 years and it is where I am going to stay.”
Among May’s favourite memories at the club are the team’s on-pitch successes.
They won the championship in 1995 and most recently a Waratah Cup in 2011.
“The premiership was great. I remember we won it at Marconi stadium against Blacktown,” May said.
“But really, it’s just the nice people that are there.
“It’s like a little family. There’s not many of us but we’re a family and we all appreciate each other.”
May said he was delighted to see the club start the season in a positive fashion.
“We don’t spend a lot of money on players and we try and develop what we have in the club,” May said.
“It seems to be working this season, as some of the results have shown.”

Round 12 Preview – PS4 NPL NSW Men’s U20
We’re past the halfway mark of the PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s U20 competition and it couldn’t be tighter with just nine points separating first placed Blacktown City to tenth placed neighbours Blacktown Spartans.
And with each team demonstrating that they can beat anyone on their given day, there are sure to be several surprises in store in an action-packed Heritage Round.
Match of the Round
Sydney Olympic v APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Sunday 1.00pm at Belmore Sports Ground
Two sides with top six ambitions meet in an important Sunday afternoon clash at Belmore Sports Ground with sixth-placed Sydney Olympic hosting fifth-placed APIA Leichhardt.
Only goal difference separates the two traditional rivals on the competition ladder and in one of the tightest competitions in recent memory, there is arguably no better reflection of the nature of this season’s league than the respective positions and fortunes of Olympic and APIA.
Tied on 17 points alongside fourth-placed Wollongong Wolves, the loser of Sunday’s encounter could potentially slide as low as eighth with Hakoah Sydney City East, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, Parramatta and Blacktown Spartans all within striking distance of the top six.
With the season edging into its final half this could prove to be a decisive affair in the context of the finals race and is sure to be an entertaining contest with plenty of exciting talent on display.
Olympic’s Michael Loupis netted a hattrick against Blacktown Spartans last weekend and has been a shrewd operator in the final third for John Theodoropoulos’ side this campaign whilst APIA profess no shortage in the firepower department with the likes of Duncan Stewart and Dominic Cox offering consistent sights of their calibre in APIA Leichhardt’s season to date.
Saturday
Sutherland Sharks v Manly United, 4.30pm at Seymour Shaw
Sutherland Sharks have risen to third place on the competition ladder after securing four consecutive wins and they will put their premiership credentials to the test when Allan Edmondson’s side host second-placed Manly United at Seymour Shaw.
Manly produced one of campaign’s standout results in their comprehensive 3-1 defeat of competition leaders Blacktown City when the Cromer Park outfit put the heavyweights to the sword in their own backyard on Sunday.
It broke a run of three games without a win for Manly who, having steadied the ship in such emphatic fashion, will fancy their chances at toppling their cousins in one of the round’s most anticipated fixtures.
Manly ran out 2-1 victors in the reverse fixture on the opening round of the PlayStation 4 NPL NSW Men’s 20’s tournament with Sipan Berti at the double, and it will no doubt be another close encounter as the two sides keep the heat on Blacktown City at the top of the table.
Bonnyrigg White Eagles v Rockdale City Suns, 5.00pm at Bonnyrigg Sports Club
Back to back losses have seen Bonnyrigg drop out of the top six after a run of five wins in six games had the White Eagles soaring at the front of the table.
But Stephen Sigmund’s side will still remain a challenge of the highest order for bottom-placed Rockdale, who are running out of time to keep their finals hopes alive.
With the best defensive record in the league, Bonnyrigg will hope to banish memories of last week’s 3-1 defeat at home to Wollongong in order to kick-start their campaign once more.
And it could very well be a match that places last-placed Rockdale into the last chance saloon – although the Ilinden side do have time on their hands, and evidence above them on the ladder in Parramatta and Bonnyrigg has shown that achieving a small run of results can go some way in reigniting a faltering season.
Hakoah Sydney City East v Wollongong Wolves, 5.00pm at Hensley Athletic Field
Wollongong Wolves enjoyed a fine away day at Bonnyrigg Sports Club last Saturday to propel the South Coast side into fourth position but that could easily be swept away when Alfredo Esteves’ men take on Hakoah Sydney City East at Hensley Athletic Field.
A stunning second half comeback saw Hakoah Sydney City East come from two goals down at half time in last weekend’s 4-2 win against Sydney United 58, and with the side snapping at the heels of Sydney Olympic, APIA Leichhardt Tigers and their Round 12 opponents Wollongong Wolves another win could see Hakoah restore their position in the top six.
It will be a tough ask against a Wolves side who have added a strong defensive resilience to their game in recent fixtures and their capacity to call upon the likes of Ricky Zucco could prove to be crucial against Hakoah on Saturday.
Sunday
Parramatta v Blacktown Spartans, 1.00pm at Melita Stadium
A huge three points are at stake when ninth placed Parramatta host tenth placed Blacktown Spartans at Melita Stadium
Blacktown have been in freefall with just one point from their last fifteen and although they beat Mark Zecchin’s side on the opening day in a 4-3 thriller the momentum is certainly with their opponents.
Parramatta have been growing in confidence and momentum over the last month and in Nicholas Chymiak possess a man in form who must be relishing the chance to meet the Spartans again, having scored a brace at Blacktown Football Park in Round 1.
Sydney United 58 v Blacktown City, 2.00pm at Sydney United Sports Centre
Blacktown City will look to get their championship campaign back on track when they visit 11th placed Sydney United at Sydney United Sports Centre on Sunday.
The match precedes what looms to be the match of the 2016 PlayStation 4 NPL NSW Men’s season so far where the two first grade Sydney and Blacktown teams have been standout challengers.
But this is sure to be match capable of offering highlights of a similar calibre with Blacktown City sensing an opportunity to regain ground at the top knowing second placed Manly travel to third placed Sutherland the day before.
Similarly there is a lot on the line for Davor Bajsic’s Sydney who demonstrated their quality when they raced to a 2-0 half-time lead against the competition frontrunners back in the first round of the season; they will hope to finish the job for a crucial win should they be offered a second chance.

Round 11 Review – PS4 NPL NSW Men’s U20
The PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s U20 could not be any tighter at the half-way point of the 2016 season with Sutherland Sharks in hot pursuit of Blacktown City and Manly United at the top of the competition ladder.
It was first versus second in the Match of the Round, where Blacktown City hosted Manly United in a hugely anticipated clash at Lilys Football Centre.
Match of the Round
Blacktown City 1-3 Manly United, 1.00pm at Lilys Football Centre
A resurgent Manly United ran out deserved 3-1 winners over Blacktown City at Lilys Football Centre in a result that sees Andrew Christiansen’s side draw level on points with their opponents at the top of the PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s U20 ladder.
Having suffered back to back losses against APIA Leichhardt and Sydney United 58 it was an emphatic response from the Cromer Park outfit who put the competition frontrunners to the sword in their own backyard.
Shervin Adeli nudged the visitors ahead early on only for Nikita Andricopoulos to restore parity seconds after half-time but Manly were not to be denied a deserved triumph with Nathan Separovic and Eddie Rinaldi finishing the job late on.
A sleepwalking Blacktown City side offered their weakest showing of the 2016 season so far and could’ve been punished further had the visitors pounced more clinically on the slew of favourable opportunities gifted their way, with Manly defender Todd Balneaves missing from the penalty spot in the first half.
The writing was on the wall for Blacktown early on when Adeli neatly tucked Dylan Whitlock’s cutback into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season.
Alexander Partridge had previously spurned a golden chance to break the deadlock when he fired over from close range but the midfielder made amends shortly after when he was bundled over inside the area by Blacktown’s Jake Mamone.
Tristan Prendergast denied Balneaves from the spot with a good save to his right and the penalty save along with a half-time grilling from Blacktown coach Ben Wright provoked a reaction from the competition leaders who drew level seconds after half-time when Andricopoulos volleyed home Jake Borremeo’s cross.
The equalizer sparked more urgency from Blacktown who enjoyed their best spell of the game after restoring parity but were still missing their usual fluency and cohesion with the ball.
Similarly, the City rearguard were abnormally unorganised at the back which invited waves of penetrative counter-attacking football from the visitors, who once again lamented a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.
But the chances continued to flow for a persistent Manly outfit who restored the lead through Nathan Separovic after some lacklustre set-piece defending from Blacktown.
And the visitors sealed the three points minutes later when Rinaldi finished off a classic counter-attacking move at the back post to consign Blacktown to their second defeat of the season.
Manly face third-placed Sutherland on Saturday afternoon’s Heritage Round fixture while Blacktown City travel to lowly Sydney United 58 on Sunday.

Saturday
Sutherland Sharks 3-2 APIA Leichhardt Tigers, 4.30pm at Seymour Shaw
Sutherland Sharks moved up to third on the competition ladder after edging APIA Leichhardt Tigers in a 3-2 thriller for their fourth win in a row.
Chris McStay opened the scoring early on for Allan Edmondson’s side who drove home their advantage through Judd Duncan and Nathan Roberts.
Julian Rinaldi opened his account for the season with Christopher Phillips also netting a late consolation for APIA, who drop into fifth position having been leapfrogged into third by Saturday’s victors.
Bonnyrigg White Eagles 1-3 Wollongong Wolves, 5.00pm at Bonnyrigg Sports Club
Bonnyrigg White Eagles slipped out of the top six for the first time in four weeks after going down 3-1 to Wollongong Wolves at Bonnyrigg Sports Club.
In fifth and sixth placed respectively prior to kick off, the victory places Alfredo Esteves’ Wollongong into fourth position whilst the White Eagles slide into eighth – with only two points separating the two finals hopefuls at the conclusion of Round 11.
Goals from Brett Wilson, Justin Ivanovic and Jack Lombo claimed all three points on a grand away trip for Wollongong who are now unbeaten in three weeks.
Asmir Kradric was the lone scorer for Stephen Sigmund’s side who return to Bonnyrigg Sports Club in Heritage Round looking to take maximum points off bottom-placed Rockdale.
Sunday
Sydney Olympic v Blacktown Spartans, 1.00pm at Belmore Sports Ground
A fine hat trick from an in-form Michael Loupis condemned Blacktown Spartans to another defeat as Samuel Jacob’s side went down 3-2 to Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sports Ground.
Having served a one week suspension in Round 10 the return of Loupis proved instrumental for Olympic who enter a crowded top six on goal difference.
Leyton Hinton and Michael Konestabo were on the scoresheet for the Spartans but it wasn’t enough to halt another worrying display from Blacktown, who have failed to register three points since Round 5.
It sets up a crucial match date with Parramatta in next week’s Heritage Round, whilst Olympic host APIA Leichhardt looking to string together back to back wins to further their prospects of a top six finish.
Parramatta v Rockdale City Suns, 1.00pm at Melita Stadium
A rampant first-half performance from Parramatta paved way to a routine 4-0 win over cellar-dwellers Rockdale City Suns at Melita Stadium.
Mark Zecchin’s side struck four times in the opening 45 minutes with a Lawrence Hannah brace and goals to Nicholas Chymiak and Mitchell Davidson piling on the misery for the visiting Rockdale.
The win moves Parramatta closer to striking distance of the top six ahead of a crucial encounter with Blacktown Spartans next weekend, whilst Rockdale know only a win against Bonnyrigg will keep their dwindling finals hopes alive.
Sydney United 58 v Hakoah Sydney City East, 2.00pm at Sydney United Sports Centre
An incredible second-half turnaround from Hakoah Sydney City East defeated Sydney United 58 4-2 at Sydney United Sports Centre in the final match of Round 11.
Davor Bajsic’s Sydney were desperate to build on last round’s big upset over Manly United and were on course for back to back wins for the first time this campaign when they led 2-0 at half-time courtesy of Jonah Caragher and Jack Stewart.
But Hakoah came storming back in the second with Emilio Manos firing in his sixth and seventh goals of the season while Harry Jones and Jordan Swibel completed the rout.

Payne-Nikas combine to help United 58 demolish Hakoah
Sydney United 58 continued their dominance over the PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition with a 4-1 victory over Hakoah Sydney City East at Sydney United Sports Centre.
Chris Payne and Panni Nikas were the chief destroyers with the former scoring a fantastic hat trick before Hakoah substitute Adrian De Jong struck back. Nikas responded within a minute to give United 58 their three goal cushion again.
The match will be remembered for an exquisite goal by Payne who combined with Nikas on the edge of the box to score a goal which had the United 58 faithful left in awe.
Hakoah Sydney City East started the match on the front foot, pinning Sydney United 58 in their own half by maintaining possession and playing long balls into the opposition’s box in the first five minutes.
The first chance fell to Hakoah in the third minute when Jordan Mundell kept the ball in play before cutting back to an oncoming Deklan Gilmartin whose first time shot went wide of the mark.
Sydney United 58 quickly got into their usual passing game and got their first shot on target in the 6th minute when Payne laid off to Nikas with the latter stepping past one defender before his shot fell straight to the chest of Hakoah goalkeeper Anthony Costa.
United 58 didn’t make a mistake with their next opportunity a minute later as a through ball saw them beat the offside trap and create three on one situation. Nikas dribbled the ball into the box on the right hand side before squaring the ball to a free Payne who tapped in to give his side a 1-0 lead.
The home side’s confidence continued to grow and in the 18th minute Nick Stavroulakis won the ball before offloading to Yutaro Shin to start a counter attack. Shin found Payne on the left hand side who then passed onto Nikas with the attacking midfielder laying a through ball to Shin. The winger’s first tough let him down though as Costa came out to clear the ball.
Hakoah attacker Hussein Akil was hungry to get his side back into the game and on 23 minutes found space in the middle of the park before unleashing a shot straight to Sydney United goalkeeper Thomas Manos.
Manos was called into action again five minutes later when Adrian D’Mello cut off a failed Jacob Tratt clearance before his volley was easily saved by the keeper.
The misses came back to haunt Hakoah when Sydney United 58 doubled their lead thanks to a piece of magical play in the 38th minute. Nikas and Payne combined again to perfection, passing the ball to each other four times on the edge of the box leading to the latter going through on goal and poking the ball past a rushing Costa and into the back of the net.
United 58 almost made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time when a failed clearance from the corner forced Hakoah to clear off the line.
Payne came out of the break eager to secure his hat trick and almost had it in the 49th minute when he dribbled into the box on the left before cutting the ball onto his favour right foot with his shot hitting the left hand upright.
Two minutes later Payne thought he had his third in the bag when he beat the offside trap to go one on one with Costa from a perfect Ursok long ball. Payne composed himself before rounding Costa, but made his angle to score incredibly difficult. With the goal at his beckoning, Payne touched the ball towards the goal with the ball trickling along the goal line with Hakoah’s defence retreating well to clear the ball.
The former A-League striker finaly secured his treble when he made it 3-0 in the 60th minute – with a stroke of luck going his way.
After Peter Triantis received the ball in the middle of the park he played a lovely through ball to Jacob Tratt on the right hand touchline who passed back inside to Nikas. The latter put Tratt through in space with a great first time header before his wayward left foot strike fell right into Payne’s path for the marksmen to tap into the net.
Payne was on fire and almost had his fourth in the 68th minute. Triantis played another inch perfect ball, this time to Masato Mochizuki who went flying down the left hand touchline before his cross fell straight to Payne. Luckily for Hakoah, goalkeeper Anthony Costa was quickly off his line to thwart the chance.
Hakoah were not throwing up the white flag yet and on 73 minutes almost got a goal back when substitute Andre De Jong rose well from a corner to head goalwards only for Triantis to clear off the line.
De Jong made no mistake just minutes later when he struck the ball into the back of the net as United 58 failed to clear a free kick.
United 58 were not happy with the scrappy goal they conceded and restored their three goal cushion right from the kick off when Panni Nikas got onto the ball in the box, wrong footing his defender with a great step over and sending the ball into the bottom left hand corner to make it 4-1.
Hakoah’s night went from bad to worse when Adrian D’Mello was given his marching orders after receiving his second yellow with six minutes remaining in the match.
Following the match Sydney United 58 head coach Mark Rudan was pleased with his side’s performance despite conceding a sloppy goal.
“I’m disappointed with the goal, we certainly need to improve in our defensive set pieces,” he said.
“But I thought we were in total control and dominated from start to finish.
“It’s been a heavy work load for us, it’s been 15 games so far including the cup competition and we are pretty much rotating 14 players so it’s good to now have a break from the midweek games.
“But I keep saying we’ve got a long way to go and we’ve got a good challenge next week at home (against Blacktown City).
“The boys are in fantastic mental and physical condition so we are really looking forward to that game next week.”
In the away dressing room Hakoah head coach Mark Robertson was disappointed with his side’s character against the top placed United 58.
“It’s always tough when you come up against a team that is sitting up the top,” he said.
“You look for character in players when you go one behind, can you get back to 1-1 but at the end of the day we didn’t show character and that’s unfortunate, that’s just the way it was on the night for us.”
Sydney United 58 host their second consecutive home game when they take on Blacktown City in a special heritage round top of the table clash next week as Hakoah return home to face Wollongong Wolves.
