Mt Druitt stun Sky Blues with hard fought draw

13 May , 2022 By Football NSW

It was points shared in a pulsating 1-1 contest between Mt Druitt Town Rangers and Sydney FC on Friday night at Popondetta Park.

Sydney FC might be disappointed not to take full points from the contest after their performance across the 90 minutes as the young side opened the scoring through a Patrick Wood thunderbolt but had to settle for a draw.

Mt Druitt Town Rangers put in a fantastic shift against one of the in-form teams of the National Premier Leagues NSW competition with Olayinka Sunmola curling home a wonderful goal to earn the hosts a point in a tightly contested game.

Both sides were chomping at the bit after losses last week and got straight into their work.

Both Sydney FC’s Matthew Scarcella and Town Rangers Jack Stewart had tame efforts.

Sydney FC started to find their rhythm and made inroads in the contest.

Zachary Sapsford prodded one wide from a cross then he nodded a header right at Rangers custodian Robert Fanella.

The Rangers put some passes together with some neat interplay before Louis Khoury fired over the bar and Stewart quickly followed, turning well, but fired wide.

It was almost a horror moment for Sydney FC at the back as defender Aiden Simmons tried to sweep away a cutback from Rangers Fumoto Kamada but swept it onto the post then away.

As the half wore on, Sydney FC started to surge forward and racked up the chances.

Patrick Wood fired home from inside the box then Scarcella’s effort ended up high and wide behind the goal.

Wood continued to show his experience with a pair of chances – a tame header that landed right in the hands of Fanella then a shot that was also blocked by the Rangers shot stopper.

The Sydney FC striker brought the house down at the end of the first half.

He found some space about 30 yards before Wood unfurled a venomous strike which left Fanella stranded and made it 1-0 going to the break.

Looking to build on their lead, Sydney FC had the majority of possession but their best chance came on the hour mark when Aaron Gurd’s header was claimed safely.

As the game started to open up, Mt Druitt Town pushed forward looking for the equaliser.

The hosts had a few chances that didn’t test Sydney FC custodian Adam Pavlesic.

Sydney FC kept looking for a second goal to give themselves a cushion.

Substitute Adrian Segecic played a delighted wall pass before he forced Fanella into a low save.

The hosts found an equaliser on the counter through a wonderful, curled strike.

The first effort from Solomon-John Monahan Vaiika was played to the feet of substitute Olayinka Sunmola to make it 1-1.

Buoyed by his goal, Sunmola almost made it a brace.

He latched onto a loose ball before he struck the base of the post to the groans of the home crowd.

Headed into stoppage time, Sydney FC went close to a winner.

Substitute Louis Agosti curled a cross onto the head of Sapsford which forced a fantastic stop from Town Rangers Fanella.

Speaking post match Mt Druitt Town Rangers coach Stewart Montgomery was pleased with the effort from his side against a top team.

“That was one of our more complete games in regard to our defensive and midfield requirements. Hopefully it is something to build on for us. We had a good crack at the side near the top and hit the post three times.” said Montgomery.

“It’s never been our problem in creating chances. Both sides had their chances but I think we controlled the game while they hit us on the counter as expected.”

For Sydney FC coach Jim Van Weeren, it was points dropped for his side in an open contest tonight in the west.

“I think we were far from our best. We still think we could’ve had more as could’ve they so maybe a fair result. We talked about their counterattack at the break and couldn’t implement it which is disappointing for us.” said Van Weeren.

“Drawing is better than losing but this was a contest we thought could’ve been a win. The whole group is disappointed after that and feel like it was two points dropped for us.”

Olympic make light work of struggling Rangers

7 May , 2022 By Football NSW

National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s Round 10 saw Sydney Olympic convincingly dispose of Mt Druitt Town Rangers by 4-0 on a cold night at Belmore Sportsground, which had the side singing at full voice in the dressing rooms after the encounter.

It was almost all over by half time as the home side took a three-goal lead into the break thanks to a brace from the evergreen Roy O’Donovan and a goal to Sam McIllhatton, before Oliver Puflett sealed the deal in the second stanza of play by scoring his side’s fourth.

Sydney Olympic took the lead in the 7th minute when a cross by Adam Parkhouse was met at the back post by O’Donovan who simply headed in unmarked. It was an easy goal that frustrated the bench of the visitors.

In the 12th minute McIllhatton should really have scored from close range, but fired just over the crossbar after receiving the ball from the right.

The hosts came back for more in the 20th minute as a shot from outside the box by Darcy Burgess just shaved the post.

Shortly afterwards Olympic were at it again as a long ball reached Puflett on the far side but he drilled his shot straight at goalkeeper Jerome Narayan who was deputising for the suspended Robert Fanella who will be back next week.

Sydney Olympic doubled their lead in the 38th minute when McIllhatton connected sweetly with the ball and steered it in from the right. It was nice finish from the former Sydney FC player.

Right on the stroke of half time Sydney Olympic made it three when Rhett De Silva conceded a free kick on the edge of the box and received a yellow card for his troubles from referee Michael Weiner.

O’Donovan stepped up to take the free kick and drilled it straight through the wall and into the back of the net to score his second of the night.

It was a killer blow for the visitors who went into the break three goals down.

The coaching staff then reacted and made three substitutions during the interval to reinvigorate the Norwich City-lookalikes and it seemed to be the magic potion that the side needed as they came out with renewed vigour that was lacking in the first stanza of play.

In the 55th minute a cross by Jack Stewart found Desilva at the far post who volleyed just wide in what was Mt Druitt Town’s first real chance of the game.

Shortly afterwards Olayinka Sunmola hit the post  from an acute angle as the visitors tried to get back into the contest.

Despite Mt Druitt Town’s great start to the second half, it was Sydney Olympic that made it four and sent a dagger through the hearts of the visitors in the 64th minute.

A magnificent cross from the by-line reached Puflett who headed home from close range with the goal wide open.

The home side then made three substitutions of their own in the 76th minute, but it was more of a reward for their bench and a rest for their playmakers who had given the side a four-goal lead.

The last real chance of the game on a cold night at Belmore belonged to Fabio Ferreira who fired a diagonal shot over the crossbar in the 85th minute.

After a 4-0 loss last week to APIA Leichhardt, a 4-0 win against Mt Druitt Town Rangers, at least mathematically, indicates an eight-goal turnaround by Sydney Olympic, which must be a great confidence booster for any side.

After the game Sydney Olympic coach Ante Juric as pleased with his team and their overall performance.

“The intensity was there today and I am very happy with tonight and proud of the boys,” he said.

“The performance was excellent and the quality was there. We were tight at the back which was excellent, considering that we had copped ten goals in three games.

“We are not lacking confidence but this result gives us extra belief and consolidates where I think we should be. It’s a great win to get us back on track.”

His counterpart at Mt Druitt Town Rangers Stewart Montgomery was obviously disappointed with the defeat but still managed to see some of the positives in his young side.

“We started pretty well in the first half but then we made an error and gave them a goal,” he said.

“We came back into the game but made another error.

“It’s hard therefore to keep the positive football moments when those goals are conceded.

“We need to figure a few things out as their goals really came from our mistakes, but in the second half we changed our shape and it felt a bit better, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Rangers floored by red-hot Mendes

30 April , 2022 By Football NSW

Manly United FC were comfortable 4-2 winners against Mt Druitt Town Rangers on a cold Saturday night at Popondetta Park.

Mt Druitt Town Rangers were handed the perfect start when Japanese import Fumoto Kamada put them ahead after 11 minutes but a dazzling hat-trick from Manly United FC striker Bruno Mendes humbled the hosts.

Substitute Marcus Lal added the fourth to the Northern Beaches boys and although the home side found a late consolation goal to substitute Olayinka Sunmola it didn’t help them rise from the bottom rung of the National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition.

Trying to atone for their mid-week loss, Mt Druitt Town Rangers were off to a quick start tonight with a chance within two minutes for Kamada that flew wide.

Kamada made amends for his miss with the opening goal of the contest in the 17th minute as he tucked one home in the left corner to make it 1-0 to the home side.

Manly United were the next to try their luck as Seiya Kambayashi stood over a free kick from just outside the box that he whistled over the bar just after the half-hour mark.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute for a foul inside the box that gave them the perfect opportunity to equalise.

Brazilian import Mendes stepped up and rolled it home to equalise.

It was double delight for Manly United soon after as once again Mendes made magic happen.

The striker unfurled a shot that bounced off Rangers’ custodian Robert Fanella and into the net to take the score to 2-1 in the 39th minute.

Mt Druitt had the final chance of the half through sharpshooter Jack Stewart.

He weaved between Manly United defenders like it was peak hour traffic, but his effort flew over.

Straight from the second half kick off, Manly United picked up where they left off as Mendes took a free kick that whistled wide of the left-hand post, then minutes later Kambayashi struck the post with an effort.

The Rangers continued to push forward to find the equaliser and went close through former Manly United player Travis Oughtred.

The tall defender flicked his header towards the top corner, but Manly United keeper Jack Greenwood tipped it over.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Manly United were awarded another spot kick as custodian Robert Fanella received a red card for bringing down a player in the area.

Mendes stepped up to the spot and rolled home his penalty to secure his hat trick and take the score to 3-1.

The striker almost had a fourth when he struck the base of the post, but the ball fell to the feet of substitute Lal to take the visitors tally to four.

There was some late consolation for Mt Druitt before stoppage time as substitute Olayinka Sunmola strode into the box and fired into the bottom corner to make it 4-2.

Speaking post match, Mt Druitt Town Rangers coach Stewart Montgomery was disappointed his side threw away the game with some defensive errors again.

“The first 20-25 minutes, we were good and took the lead,” Montgomery said.

“We pressed well and it worked on them but then the defensive errors crept back in.

“It is something each individual player has to own to help us turn around the results.

“It is testament to the teams resolve and ability to remain in these contests.

“At 2-1 we were in the contest but it is just moments that are costing us.”

For Manly United FC coach Adam Griffiths, he was happy with the sides effort to take three points away from a tough away trip.

“I thought we dominated in possession,” Griffiths explained.

“There was a lot of movement and chances in the final third while they were dangerous on the counter attack.

“All in all, it was a good three points away from home for us.

“We’ve had a lot of away games so we’ll be able to push up the ladder once we get some players back with the ability that we have in this side.”

Jesic hat-trick sinks sorry Rangers

26 April , 2022 By Football NSW

Marconi Stallions continued its winning form with a 4-2 victory over the Mt Druitt Town Rangers in a rescheduled round 6 fixture on a rain sodden Popondetta Park thanks to a hat-trick from skipper Marko Jesic and some wizardry from Domenic Costanzo.

Stewart Montgomery’s men had their chances and all looked promising when Jason Perez equalized just before the break.

But the Stallions proved too strong thanks to a lethal hat-trick from Jesic who played well but the game belonged to Costanzo who pulled the visitors strings on the left flank for ninety minutes.

The Stallions got off to a blistering start after a delightful ball from Giorgio Speranza found Costanzo in behind who was fouled in the box.

Jesic dispatched the penalty to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Costanzo was a constant thorn on the left side for the former NSL giants in the first half.

The 20-year-old moved down the wing before he ended up having a shot at the near post which was saved by Rangers custodian Robert Fanella.

Mt Druitt had their first shot in anger close to the half hour mark. Diogo Barbosa found some space in midfield before he unfurled a wicked shot which crashed off the post.

Stallions continued to enjoy most of the possession in the contest as Thomas James tried his luck with a chance that was easily claimed.

Mt Druitt Town Rangers found the equaliser just before the break. A superb cutback from Jack Stewart found a wide-open  Perez who shaped home for 1-1 and it was game on.

Coming out of the break, Marconi Stallions felt just fine taking the lead in the 52nd minute. Jesic stood tall from a free-kick and nodded home to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

The Stallions doubled their advantage just after the hour mark. A surging run from Costanzo produced a save from Fanella, with the ball falling to Jesic who made it 3-1.

Searching for a way back into the contest, the Rangers did pull one back in the 74th minutes. Jack Stewart’s left sided cross was nodded down by Barbosa into the path of Cooper Coskerie to make it 3-2 and again the hosts were chipping at Marconi.

Peter Tsekenis’ men looked to restore their two-goal advantage as the game headed into the final ten minutes. Both Charles Lokolingoy and substitute Christopher Hatfield had shots which whizzed wide off the post.

After his wonderful performance, Costanzo got the goal he thoroughly deserved and put the contest to bed for the visitors. He drove into the area after a cheeky Giorgio Speranza chip to thrash home for a 4-2 victory.

The visitors had a pair of chances late in the contest to make it a five-star performance. Substitute Samuel Gulisano rounded the keeper but poked wide then Lokolingoy fired over.

Speaking post-match, Mt Druitt Town Rangers coach Stewart Montgomery once again felt like it was a missed opportunity for his side.

“Story of the season really,” he stated to Football NSW.

“We’ve come away with a defeat where we’ve given them four goals on four individual errors.

“Our general play was a high standard so it’s back to the drawing board for us.

“We must continue to be brave and push forward. I think we play the same way against everyone and got into an attacking position to score twice tonight.

“Unfortunately we gave up four.”

For Marconi Stallions coach Peter Tsekenis, it was another three points following on from their victory against Sydney United 58 in round 8.

“I didn’t think we were at our best, but we scored four goals.

“We were disappointed to concede two goals and I think if we did a few more things right, we could’ve run away with it.

“It is all about confidence at this point of the season. We know we can score goals but haven’t had a clean sheet thus far this season.

“Now we work towards that but its good to take three points at this time of the season.”

Wolves pick up crucial victory over Rangers

22 April , 2022 By Football NSW

Wollongong Wolves secured a 3-0 win over Mount Druitt Town Rangers at WIN Stadium on Friday night.

Two goals to Lachlan Scott and one to Nicholas Duarte took the hosts to three as they held out Mt Druitt, who have been known for their high-scoring matches.

The home side had a strong first half, limiting their opponents’ chances and creating numerous of their own.

Eight minutes in, Peter Simonoski found space on the right and delivered a cross towards the back post for Josh Macdonald whose header was blocked.

Ten minutes later, the hosts were awarded a free kick on the right that Macdonald put into the middle and found Scott who glanced his header into the gloves of Robert Fanella.

In the 25th minute, the Wolves looked to have received reward for their early efforts when Scott had the ball in the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

However, just four minutes later, Scott would score the first of the match as Senna Stevenson played the ball across to Scott centrally outside the box who speared his strike into the bottom-left corner.

Buoyed by Scott’s goal, Wollongong set their sights on more with Simonoski and Leroy Jennings both sending shots over from outside the box not long after.

The Wolves took their one-goal lead into the break looking to pick up their second win of the season.

Just three minutes into the second half, Macdonald took aim from the edge of the box bending an effort towards the right side of the net, but Fanella was equal to it.

With 52 minutes played, Mount Druitt set off on a rare foray forward as Jack Stewart was played in behind the right channel of the Wolves’ defence but blazed his shot over the bar.

In the 72nd minute, the Wolves were awarded a penalty.

Lachlan Scott took responsibility but saw his shot parried onto the crossbar by Fanella before the ball was cleared.

It didn’t take long for the side to find the second goal as from the resulting corner, Duarte was found free in the middle and headed home.

Only three minutes after this, Wollongong added a third with Duarte causing problems again this time driving into the left of the box before sliding the ball across to Scott who passed it into the netting.

The Wolves’ saw the game out ensuring the three points against Mount Druitt Town Rangers.

Wollongong Wolves coach Luke Wilkshire was pleased with the victory, especially considering the three goals scored.

“It was well deserved,” he said.

“A little bit more clinical upfront which is important. A much-needed win.”

Wilkshire also praised the performance of Duarte who scored a goal and picked up an assist after coming on as a substitute.

“Nico’s been fantastic. He’s been in and out [of the team], he’s had opportunities.

“He scored two great goals in the 20s in 45 minutes.

“He’s a young man who’s got a lot to give and that sort of impact is what you want,” he said.

Mount Druitt coach Stuart Montgomery felt there was a lot for his side to improve on across all aspects.

“That performance tonight was arguably the worst that we’ve played all year which is disappointing,” he said.

“We really let ourselves down in all phases of play.

“We have to stop conceding goals.”
